Jessup University head men’s basketball coach Mark Darnall is adding experience to the bench with the addition of Patrick Frost as an assistant coach. Frost will stay within the PacWest, where he has coached for the last five seasons.
“We hit a home run with the hire of Patrick,” said Darnall. “Patrick brings a lot of winning experience from numerous levels to our bench and will help propel this program forward into the NCAA Division II era. He is a tireless worker, outstanding recruiter, he really understands the game and will be a great mentor to our student-athletes. I’m excited to welcome him and his wife Shelby to the Warrior family.”
Frost joins Travis Timmons as the program’s two full-time assistants. Timmons will be entering year four on the bench, having joined the Warriors in the summer of 2021 under then-head coach Lance Von Vogt.
The move to Rocklin is a big one for Frost as he returns to the mainland after one season as the Associate Head Coach for Hawaii Pacific. The Sharks entered the season picked to finish eighth in the PacWest preseason poll, but an 18-11 year, including a 13-7 mark in conference action, saw them finish third and earn a berth in the conference tournament.
“I could not be more excited to join coach Darnall’s staff at Jessup,” said Frost. “He has a clear vision for the program, his energy and enthusiasm for our team was very evident as we got to know each other during the hiring process, and I cannot wait to get to work and learn from him and Coach Timmons on a daily basis.
Before making the move to the Aloha State, Frost spent three seasons with Point Loma in San Diego. The Sea Lions experienced one of the best stretches in program history during that time, as they went 41-10 during Frost’s tenure, qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Tournament each year.
The Sea Lions’ best season during this run came in the 2019-20 campaign, as they finished 24-6. Point Loma defeated Biola 98-95 in the PacWest Championship, claiming their second consecutive conference tournament title. A shot at the national championship was negated after the national tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
PLNU went 8-3 the next year in a shortened season that ended with a return trip to nationals.
Frost took over defensive responsibilities for the Sea Lions in the 2021-22 season, his final year in San Diego. That year saw PLNU win the PacWest regular season championship thanks to a 16-4 record in conference play. PLNU finished the season 21-10, capped off with a trip to the national tournament.
Outside of the PacWest, Frost has one year of experience as an assistant coach for Western Oregon. The Wolves earned an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional that year. He spent two seasons as the video coordinator for Division I University of San Diego and spent three at Division III Whitworth University.
While at Whitworth, the Pirates went 74-12 and won three Northwest Conference Championships. Whitworth spent three weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation during the 2016 season.
The Warriors come into the 2024-25 season, their first in the PacWest, after a run to the national tournament in their final NAIA season. On joining the Jessup team, Frost added, “Jessup is a special place, and I look forward to building meaningful relationships with our players and contributing to their success both on and off the court.”
Frost hails from Seattle and played collegiately at the University of Redlands. He married his wife Shelby in April of 2023, and the two are expecting their first child in early December.
