Furman men’s basketball coach Niko Medved announced on Tuesday that he will retain assistant coach Bob Richey and has appointed Sam Waniewski as the program’s director of men’s basketball operations.
Richey, who recently completed his second season with the Paladin program, arrived at Furman in the summer of 2011 after five seasons on the Charleston Southern men’s basketball staff, including serving as associate head coach for the 2010-11 campaign. The Florence, S.C., native helped the Buccaneers achieve their highest win total in 14 years in 2011 and recruited five players who have gone on to garner All-Big South Conference honors, highlighted by the school’s No. 2 all-time leading scorer Jamarco Warren and 2013 all-league performers Saah Nimley and Arlon Harper.
Waniewski, a native of Woodland, Calif., joins the Furman staff following one season as video coordinator at Colorado State University. During his time in Fort Collins, Colo., the Rams earned an NCAA Tournament berth and advanced past Missouri before falling to eventual national champion Louisville. Waniewski joined the Rams staff after working as a graduate assistant under first-year Colorado State coach Larry Eustachy at Southern Miss during the 2011-12 season.
