Gem State Dirt…

Originally, I was going to title this blog Potato State Dirt, but after a bit of research, I learned that the official nickname of Idaho is the Gem State. Apparently nearly every known type of gemstone has been found there. I think Idaho potatoes are pretty popular as well, but I guess that would be an unofficial nickname. Anyway, a few things from The Gem State…

• Idaho head coach Don Verlin was given a one-year contract extension that will take him through the 2017 season. His base salary at the end of the deal will be $178,290. He holds a 97-96 record in his six seasons as the head coach at Idaho.

• Boise State head coach Leon Rice had an addendum added to his contract. According to the Idaho Statesman, he will earn more for strong Academic Progress Rate performances than originally in his restricted deal that was approved this summer. He will get an $8,000 bonus instead of $7,500 if the Broncos are in the 60-69.9 percentile, $12,000 instead of $10,000 in the 70-79.9 percentile, $15,000 instead of $12,500 in the top 80-89.9 (previous deal had stipulation for 80 percent or better), $17,000 for 90-94.9 percentile and $20,000 for 95 or above.
