Georgia Southwestern State University head men’s basketball coach Mike Leeder has hired Sean Sweeney as an assistant coach.
"I’m excited to have Sean join our staff," Leeder said. "He’s a high-energy, hard-working young man who brings a lot of positives to the program."
Sweeney comes to GSW from fellow Peach Belt Conference member Francis Marion University where he recently completed his first season under head coach Gary Edwards. Sweeney’s primary responsibilities at Francis Marion included recruiting, on-floor coaching, individual player workouts, pre- and post-season workouts and helping in the area of academic support for team members.
The 2012-13 Patriots led NCAA Division II in three-point field goal made per game (13.8) and ranked third in scoring offense (88.7 ppg) and fourth in assists per game (19.7).
"Sean worked for a great coach last year in Gary Edwards and his knowledge of the conference will prove invaluable," Leeder said.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Sweeney graduated from Charleston Southern University in 2010 with a B.S. degree in criminal justice. He also played two season on the Buccaneers’ basketball squad after transferring from Penn State Brandywine.
Sweeney was the director of basketball operations at Charleston Southern for the 2010-11 season, and also worked as an athletic office assistant at CSU.
He has been employed as a camp clinician at Wake Forest University, University of Pennsylvania, University of South Carolina, Clemson University, Charleston Southern, and The Citadel, as well as at the Anthony Johnson Basketball Camp and the Pat Eidson Basketball camp.
Active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action, Sweeney also combined basketball and mission work in the Republic of Mauritus.
