Roanoke College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Clay Nunley has announced the promotion of Matt Griggs to Associate Head Coach.

Griggs is starting his fourth year on the bench with Nunley and during his tenure with the program the Maroons have amassed 54 wins. Last season the Maroons won 19 games and finished No. 6 in the final NCAA South Regional rankings.

In 2017-18, Griggs assisted Nunley in guiding the Maroons to the 20 win mark for the first time since 2000-01. RC earned the second-seed in the ODAC Tournament and advanced to the championship game for the first time since 2007.

“Coach Griggs has been an integral part of our success since day one,” said Nunley.  “He has been a pleasure for me to work with, and many of our successes can be traced back in part to his contributions and work.  He is outstanding in what he does and what he’s meant to our program, and I’m excited for him to have this recognition.”

Prior to arriving in Salem, Griggs spent three seasons on Pat Kelsey’s staff at Winthrop. No stranger to Division III athletics, Griggs is a 2013 graduate of Centre College in Danville, KY where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education.

The Cincinnati, OH native was a member of the men’s basketball team and appeared in 108 consecutive games as well as being the team captain and a three-time conference academic honor roll member. In his four years at Centre, Griggs and his team won three conference championships and participated in the NCAA Division III national tournament three times.
