Marywood University Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Mary Jo Gunning has announced that veteran coach Eric Grundman has resigned his post as Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Grundman, who has coached the men’s basketball squad for the past 12 seasons, will remain at the University as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation and Head Men’s Golf Coach.
After an eight year tenure as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at nearby Lackawanna College, with previous stops at SUNY-Binghamton and Broome Community College as an assistant, Grundman was appointed at the start of the 2001-02 year as Marywood’s third Head Coach since the program’s inception in 1993. During his 12 seasons at the helm of the Pacers’ program, Grundman led the team to three Conference playoff berths and one ECAC South Region tournament appearance (2010-11 season).
Grundman directed the men’s basketball program to its most successful season ever in 2008-09 as the Pacers finished with a 15-11 overall record and a 9-7 mark in Conference play. The Pacers reached the post-season for the third time in program history that season and for the first time in program history had two players earn First-Team All-Conference honors.
In all, Grundman coached 14 All-Conference selections while nine men’s basketball players have been named to the All-Sportsmanship team under his watch. His 2007-08 squad earned the Conference’s Team Sportsmanship Award and 41 players have been named to the Conference’s All-Academic team during his tenure.
A national search will be conducted for a new Head Coach.
