Hampden-Sydney Basketball Head Coach Dee Vick announced the additions of Kyle Dobyns, Yorel Hawkins, and Mike Edwards ’07 to the coaching staff.
Coach Dobyns comes to H-SC from Charleston Southern University where he most recently served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Buccaneers men’s basketball team. CSU won it’s first regular season championship in 26 years and made an appearance in the NIT during his one season. Some of his primary responsibilities involved supervising and implementing the day-to-day basketball operations, coordinating community relations and charitable ventures, monitoring academic performance, as well as directing and planning the Charleston Southern Barclay Radebaugh Summer Basketball Camps.
Prior to his stint at Charleston Southern, he served as a two-year graduate assistant for East Tennessee State and then transitioned to Video Coordinator at ETSU upon completion of his Masters program in Sport Management. Coach Dobyns graduated from Carson-Newman College in 2009 with a degree in Human Services where he served as Head Manager for the men’s basketball team for two seasons.
Dobyns hails from North Charleston, SC and currently resides in Hampden-Sydney, VA.
Yorel Hawkins graduated from Division I Fairfield University in May 2011 where he was a four-year member of the Stags’ men’s basketball team under Head Coach Ed Cooley, now the head coach at Providence College. As a senior, the Stags went 25-8 and advanced to the Second Round of the NIT.
Following his collegiate career, he played on two professional European teams – C.A.T. Vigevanu in Vigevano, Italy, and Bandirma Kirmizi in Kirmizi, Turkey. He returned to the United Stats for the 2012-13 season where he served as an Assistant Varsity Coach for his high school alma mater, Apex High School, in Apex, NC. Apex went 20-10 overall with a 14-4 record in the Tri-9 Conference. Following the completion of the high school season, Hawkins was named an assistant coach for the Garner Road Elite 16U AAU team in Raleigh, NC.
Hawkins is a native of Fuquay-Varina, NC and currently resides in Hampden-Sydney, VA.
Mike Edwards ’07 will be a volunteer assistant for the Tigers for the 2013-14 season. He currently works full-time as the Assistant Director of TigeRec.
Edwards helped the Tigers earn their last ODAC Championship and NCAA Tournament win in 2007. Edwards earned second-team All-ODAC honors as a senior in 2007 and is one of 41 Tiger players to score 1,000 points, finishing his career with 1,082 points. In 2007, he was named the Tigers’ MVP and served as a team captain.
Edwards is a native of Richmond, VA and currently resides in Farmville, VA.
