Omaha Director of Athletics Trev Alberts has extended head men’s basketball coach Derrin Hansen’s contract to a four-year deal through June 30, 2018, it was announced Sunday.
In his ninth season in 2013-14, Hansen guided Omaha to a record of 17-15 (5-9 Summit League) and his program’s first Division I postseason appearance in school history. The Mavericks went 1-1 in their CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) run, highlighted by a first-round win over North Dakota.
"I would like to thank Chancellor Christensen, Trev Alberts and Josh White for their support and confidence in me and our entire staff to move our basketball program through the transition to UNO’s Division I era," Hansen said. "It gives us considerable stability in recruiting and coaching as we build for the future here at Omaha. The success our team had in 2013-14 leaves us excited and hopeful for the coming years in our program."
UNO, which is in year three of its required four-year reclassification period to Division I, is ineligible for the NCAA and NIT tournaments but may play in the CIT and CBI until 2015-16.

"He has created a winning culture during a challenging reclassification period, and that is a testament to the hard work and diligence of his entire coaching staff. Coach Hansen’s teams have succeeded early in our time as a member of the Summit League, and we are enthusiastic for continued excellence both on and off the court under his leadership."
Hansen is 149-121 over nine seasons as a head coach, and his student-athletes have picked up a variety of athletic and academic awards. Three of Hansen’s players have earned All-Summit recognition during the Division I era, as Justin Simmons was a second-team selection in 2012-13, and John Karhoff and CJ Carter were honorable mention picks in 2013-14. Karhoff was also a standout in the classroom, garnering Academic All-District and Academic All-Summit accolades.
