Hatters Bolster Basketball Staff With Addition of Brett Comer

A former rival is joining the Stetson men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2022-23 season with an eye toward helping the Hatters reach the heights he soared to during his playing career.

Brett Comer, who played collegiately at Florida Gulf Coast and was a star player on the Eagles’ “Dunk City” team that raced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2013, is the newest member of coach Donnie Jones‘ coaching staff.

Comer, who has worked at the University of Dayton with the Flyers’ basketball program since 2017, joins with returning assistant coaches Shawn Finney and Jonathan Mitchell.

“Brett brings great experience within the ASUN from his time as a star player in the league,” Jones said. “I spent time with him during my time at Dayton and was very impressed with his work ethic and ability to connect with players. I am so excited to bring his energy and attitude to impact our program.”

Comer served as a graduate assistant coach for the Flyers from 2017-19 while earning his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. It was during that 2018-19 season when he first crossed paths with Jones, who was an assistant coach for the Flyers that year.

“I am extremely excited to work with Coach Jones and the staff here at Stetson University,” Comer said. “I was fortune enough to work with Donnie at the University of Dayton where he became a mentor, but most of all, a friend to me. He is an unbelievable coach and person.”

Comer was then hired by Dayton head coach Anthony Grant to serve as Director of Player Development from 2019-21. He most recently was promoted to Director of Basketball Operations for the Flyers in June.

While at Dayton Comer was involved with teams that posted a 102-52 record, including an incredible 29-2 mark during the Covid shortened 2019-20 season when the Flyers reached a No. 3 national ranking and ran off a perfect 18-0 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

Prior to his arrival at Dayton, Comer spent the 2015-16 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana University in Pennsylvania (IUP), helping the NCAA Division II Crimson Hawks to a 21-8 record and a west division conference championship.

As a player at FGCU, the Winter Park native was a four-year starter, a two-time captain and a two-time All-ASUN first team selection. He set FGCU records for games played, games started and minutes played in his career and finished ranked 24th in NCAA history with 845 assists.

“I am honored to be back in the ASUN and be able to help our players reach their goals like I was able to years ago,” Comer said. “I can’t thank Coach Jones and the University enough for this opportunity. Go Hatters!”
