D2 Quincy University (IL) head men’s basketball coach Steve Hawkins has resigned (official release below). The statement says that Hawkins “has accepted another job opportunity, and his new position will be announced at a later date.” I have now heard from multiple sources that his most likely landing spot is at SIU where he would join new head coach Scott Nagy’s staff as an assistant coach. Hawkins, the former head coach at Western Michigan (2003-2020) had been at QU for the past two seasons. More this once the second part of this moves becomes official.

Quincy University has announced that Steve Hawkins has resigned his position as Head Men’s Basketball Coach, effective immediately. Coach Hawkins has accepted another job opportunity, and his new position will be announced at a later date. A national search for a new Head Men’s Basketball Coach is underway.

“I want to thank Coach Hawkins for his hard work and dedication to Quincy University,” said Josh Rabe, QU athletic director. “On three separate occasions, Coach Hawk has worked for the University in a manner that reflects the morals and values of the University and the community. Although his time as our men’s basketball coach is over, his handprint on the program will forever be there. As a hall-of-fame coach, he will be missed, and I look forward to following him in his future endeavors. He is forever a Hawk.”

During his past two seasons as the head men’s basketball coach, Hawkins led the team to a combined 25-32 record with a .438 win percentage, reaching the GLVC tournament in the 2022-2023 season for the first time in six years.

“This came down to a decision that was based strictly on my family. The opportunity I have in front of me allows me to take care of them,” said Steve Hawkins. “I want to thank my staff, Tim WalshPat Richardson, and Troy Potts for their tireless efforts in trying to help us turn the program in the right direction. I want to thank the players for allowing us to coach them. It has been an honor, and I look forward to years of friendship. Finally, I want to thank Josh Rabe for allowing me to come back to a place I love so much.”

“Coach Hawkins has a distinguished record of service at QU and elsewhere,” said Brian McGee, Ph.D., QU president. “Given his accomplishments, he has been offered many opportunities over time, and we understand this particular opportunity was irresistible. We appreciate all he has done at QU, and we have a high regard for him both personally and professionally.”
