Thomas College Athletic Director David Roussel ’93 has announced the hiring of Geoff Hensley as the head men’s basketball coach. Hensley takes over the Terrier program from Dick Whitmore who served in an interim capacity since mid-February.
Hensley comes to Thomas after serving as an assistant coach at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky for the past two seasons. As a member of the Colonel’s coaching staff, he helped the team post a two-year record of 44-11 with a pair of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. At Centre, Hensley served as the Recruiting Coordinator, Co-Director of Summer Basketball Camps, and the head coach of the junior varsity program.
"We are pleased to have Coach Hensley join the Thomas coaching staff and College Community," adds Roussel. "He will bring a great knowledge and passion for the game of basketball, and we look forward to him developing our young men on and off the court."
Prior to his stint at Centre, Hensley was an assistant at Springfield College for two seasons where he helped guide the Pride to a 32-21 record, including a trip to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship.
Hensley played four years of collegiate basketball for former Thomas Head Coach Paul Booth at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. During his four seasons, Hensley amassed 1,200 points and 400 assists, while being a four year starter, two year captain, three time Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) first team selection, and the 2003 GNAC Rookie of the Year. He also helped lead the Cadets to two GNAC Championships and the first NCAA Tournament victory in the programs history.
"I am extremely honored and excited for this tremendous opportunity to be the men’s basketball coach at Thomas College," says Hensley. "I want to thank President Laurie Lachance and David Roussel, along with the entire search committee, for all the time and consideration they gave to me. I am eager to be a part of the Thomas College community and help guide the men’s basketball team in the right direction."
Hensley earned a Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies with minors in English and Spanish from Norwich University in 2006, while going on to earn a Masters of Education Degree in Athletic Administration from Springfield College in 2012. After graduating from Norwich University Hensley served four years in the United States Navy as a Naval Officer, doing tours of duty on the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) and the USS DOYLE (FFG 39).
"The Thomas basketball program will begin moving in the right direction immediately. Our team will have great effort, great enthusiasm, great intelligence and great unselfishness," adds Hensley. "We have a ton of potential to accomplish great feats and it starts right now for us to get there."
