Johns Hopkins men’s basketball coach Josh Loeffler has announced the hiring of Ricky Hernandez as an assistant coach for the Blue Jays. Hernandez replaces Maurice Williams, who is now an assistant coach at Division I Longwood.

“We are very excited to have Ricky join our program,” said Loeffler. “Ricky has been a part of championships everywhere he has worked. He played a huge part in helping Moravian’s basketball team achieve unprecedented success and before that, helped establish the foundation for the heights the East Stroudsburg program has reached. His work ethic and character have been praised by everyone he has worked with and I have no doubt that he will have a great influence on our student-athletes. Ricky has worked for some of the best and I am confident he will add great value to Johns Hopkins through his knowledge, work ethic and love for the game.”

Hernandez comes to Hopkins after a two-year stint at Moravian College where he was an assistant coach for the Greyhounds. In his time in Bethlehem, he helped Moravian to 39 wins, a pair of Landmark Conference regular season championships, the 2018 Landmark Conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. In Hernandez’s first year on the staff (2016-17), the Greyhounds won 19 games – the most wins by the program since 1987-88 – tying the school record. This past year, the team set the school record for wins (20), as well as the records for points (2,385), field goals (825), three-point field goals (322), assists (455), blocks (111) and steals (317). He coached four all-conference selections as well as one D3hoops All-Mid-Atlantic honoree.

Prior to Moravian, Hernandez spent two years on the staff at Division II East Stroudsburg, where he was a graduate assistant coach. He coached two Honorable Mention All-Americans as well as three All-PSAC players and helped the Warriors to the 2015 PSAC East Championship. Hernandez has also coached at number camps and clinics along the East Coast for the last eight years. Hernandez is a 2008 graduate of West Chester, where he earned a degree in psychology. He also has a Masters in Organizational Development & Leadership from Saint Joseph’s.
