The Hillsdale College men’s basketball program completed its staff for the upcoming campaign with the hiring of Travis Schuba as an assistant coach.
“We are very excited about the addition of Travis to our program,” said Hillsdale College head men’s basketball coach Keven Bradley. “Travis has demonstrated at multiple levels his ability to recruit high character student-athletes and connect with their families.
“We were looking for an experienced coach with a focus on player development and teaching the game as we went through this hiring process, and in Travis we found a coach who excels in both of these areas. We look forward to having Travis and his wife Brooke as a part of our Hillsdale basketball family.”
A former collegiate player and eight-year coaching veteran, Schuba joins the Chargers already possessing a wealth of coaching experience at a variety of levels in the game. Immediately prior to Hillsdale, Schuba spent two seasons as an assistant with the men’s basketball program at Marietta College, a NCAA Division III institution in Ohio, where he helped guide the program to back-to-back winning seasons in the Ohio Athletic Conference, as well as an appearance in the 2023 OAC Tournament Championship game.
At Marietta, Schuba helped the Pioneers to three wins over top 25 ranked teams in two seasons, including an upset of the top-ranked team in NCAA DIII at the time, Christopher Newport, in a 73-69 victory on Nov. 11, 2023., and defending national runner-up Mount Union in an 87-72 victory on Feb. 14, 2024. Schuba served as Marietta’s Director of Player Development and oversaw the team’s opponent scouting and high school and transfer portal recruiting efforts, among other duties.
Schuba came to Marietta after a two-year stint with the Davenport University women’s basketball program. Coaching at the NCAA DII level first in 2020-21 as an assistant coach and then in 2021-22 as the program’s interim head coach, Schuba helped six Panthers players earn All-GLIAC honors across the two seasons. The 2020-21 season saw Davenport put up the program’s best winning percentage since moving to NCAA DII in 2017, and the Panthers won a GLIAC Tournament game that season for the first time in program history.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Bradley, Athletic Director Tharp, and Chief Administrative Officer Pewe for this tremendous opportunity,” Schuba said. “Joining a prestigious institution with a rich history of excellence and a strong tradition is truly an honor.
“I look forward to contributing to the program’s storied success and upholding the legacy, mission, and values of Hillsdale College. My wife, Brooke, and I are excited to be a part of the Charger family!”
A northern Michigan native, Schuba was a basketball star at Kalkaska High School from 2007 to 2010, and spent his college career at Madonna University, a NAIA school in the Detroit area. In signing with the Crusaders, Schuba joined a team that had gone through back-to-back losing seasons prior to his arrival, but over the course of his career Schuba helped turn the program around, with three straight winning seasons in his final three years on campus, including a 25-win campaign and Madonna’s first-ever WHAC title and NAIA Tournament victory in 2012-13. Schuba earned first-team All-WHAC honors twice in basketball and also stood out for the Crusaders as a two-sport athlete and All-WHAC baseball player as well. As a senior, Schuba also won the NAIA’s national 3-point contest.
Schuba graduated from Madonna in 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration, and spent two and a half years playing professionally with the Washington Generals, the long-time rivals of the Harlem Globetrotters, before moving into coaching as an assistant with Madonna in the 2016-17 season.
After the year spent at his alma mater, Schuba became the head coach at Traverse City Central High School for three years from 2017 to 2020, helping the Trojans break a 15-year conference title drought with back-to-back championships while helping develop six collegiate basketball players and a total of 13 collegiate athletes during his tenure. That success helped him break into the collegiate coaching ranks once again, as Schuba took the Davenport job in the summer of 2020.
The Hillsdale College men’s basketball team kicks off the season in early November, looking to build off a winning season in Bradley’s first year at the helm in 2023-24.
