Saint Peter’s University head men’s basketball coach Shaheen Holloway has announced the addition of five members to the men’s basketball coaching staff. Joining Holloway for his fourth season in Jersey City will be Rasheen Davis, Umar Shannon, Kevin Coyle, Daniel McGinley, and Morgan Williams.
Davis and Shannon join the staff as assistant coaches, while Coyle (Video Coordinator/Director of Player Personnel), McGinley (Video Coordinator/Assistant Director of Basketball Operations), and Williams (Director of Player Development/Recruiting Coordinator) join the program as supportive staff.
Davis brings a wealth of experience and a winning background with him to Jersey City having been on the coaching staffs of double figure NCAA Tournament programs over the course of his career. Most recently, he spent the 2019-20 season at Arizona State, where the Sun Devils were in position for an NCAA berth prior to the cancelation of the seasons due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. From 2015 through 2019, he spent a combined four years in the Atlantic 10 Conference, working two seasons at UMass Amherst (2017-18 and 2018-19) and two seasons at VCU (2015-16 and 2016-17). During that stretch, Davis was part of the highly-successful VCU staff that developed an A-10 All-Conference First Team selection, while being an integral piece in the implementation of VCU’s 2-2-1 zone press, which helped the Rams to 51 victories and a pair of NCAA Tournament berths over his two seasons with the squad. Before his stint in Virginia, he was the associate head coach at MAAC member Manhattan College for three seasons from 2012-15, during which the Jaspers won 58 games, took home the 2014 and 2015 MAAC Tournament Championship titles and advanced to two NCAA Tournaments. Before working in Riverdale, Davis was on the staff at Xavier for a couple of seasons, securing back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2011 and 2012. While on the Musketeers coaching staff, he helped the program to 47 wins, including 25 in the A-10, and mentored seven all-conference choices and the 2011 A-10 Player of the Year and All-America selection. Additionally, Davis spent time as a program assistant at Louisville (2007-08) earning an NCAA appearance, as video coordinator at Pittsburgh which led to two NCAA berths, as assistant coach at St. Thomas Aquinas College (2002-05) and coached at the high school and AAU level for Rice High School (NY) from 2005-07 and the New York Gauchos. Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from St. Thomas Aquinas in 2002 and received his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the College of New Rochelle in 2005.
Shannon comes to Jersey City from his alma mater, Saint Francis University, after spending the past five seasons on the Red Flash men’s basketball coaching staff. He revolutionized the Red Flash guard play, developing an AP Honorable Mention All-American, a pair of NEC Player of the Years, and five guards into a total of eight all-conference selections. Shannon also evolved a former walk-on into the NEC Most Improved Player award following the 2017-18 season. Shannon played three years at Saint Francis from 2009-13, scoring 936 points and averaging 12.6 points per game. He had his best season in a Red Flash uniform as a sophomore, leading the team with 15.8 points per game en route to All-NEC Second Team and NABC All-District honors. His 68 three pointers that year are currently tied for 10th all-time in school history for a single season. Shannon completed his collegiate career as a graduate transfer at MAAC member Quinnipiac, averaging 14.3 points per game for the Bobcats and surpassing the 1,000-point plateau in the process. Following his collegiate career, Shannon signed with KB Besa Peja of the Kosovo SuperLeague, the top league in that nation. In nine games with the team, Shannon averaged 12.9 points per game while averaging a team-best 5.4 assists per game.
Coyle joins Holloway’s staff as Video Coordinator/Director of Player Personnel from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City where he served as an assistant coach for the Bloodhounds during the 2019-20 campaign. He had his hands in all aspects of the program, playing a vital role in the on-court development of the Bloodhounds. Coyle spent the previous season playing professionally in Malaga, Spain after graduating from SUNY New Paltz where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Communication with a minor in Business Administration. At SUNY New Paltz, Coyle played in 10 games, starting in each of them during his two-year tenure with the program. Before New Paltz, Coyle received his Associate’s degree from Lake Land College.
McGinley begins his first season on Holloway’s staff as the Video Coordinator/Assistant Director of Basketball Operations. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2017 with a degree in PR and Sports Management. Since then, McGinley has interned for Columbia University and Jim Engles’s staff, assisted NBA/WNBA trainer DJ Sackmann with training and player development, and has worked various camps including Columbia University, Chatham High School and Bob Hurley Sr’s Hoop Group camp. Williams begins his first season on the men’s basketball coaching staff serving as Holloway’s Director of Player Development/Recruiting Coordinator after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Mount Aloysius College for three seasons. Prior to his time at Mount Aloysius, he worked on the staff of Mount St. Mary’s University as head student manager from 2015-2018 and also served as a coordinator for the basketball’s team camp. While at Mount St. Mary’s, Williams helped coaches in practice, games and conditioning sessions. He also created a system to tally player effectiveness and aided in video scouting for the program.
