Hood College names assistant

Hood College has announced the hiring of Chad Dickman as the Blazers head golf coach, assistant men’s basketball coach and facilities coordinator.

"I am very pleased to have Chad join our coaching staff," said director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach Tom Dickman. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from other successful college programs. I know that his coaching and recruiting abilities will be a huge positive for Hood College’s athletic program."

Dickman, who will also be the coordinator of facilities, will work for his father Tom, who currently serves as the director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach of the Blazers. While he will be responsible for all aspects of the golf program, he will serve as the top assistant on the men’s basketball staff and will head the Blazers’ recruiting efforts. He will also take on significant duties in scouting, on-court coaching, game preparation, film breakdown, and player development.

The younger Dickman returns to Frederick after a successful nine year stint as associate head coach at Wheeling Jesuit University, an NCAA Division II school in West Virginia. While at WJU, Dickman helped build the Cardinals into one of the better Division II programs in the country, as the program made its first NCAA tournament appearance in 2005, with back-to-back appearances following in 2011 and 2012. Known as a tireless recruiter, Dickman helped bring in two West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Freshmen of the Year and several all-conference selections. In 2012, he recruited Ohio’s Mr. Basketball (Justin Fritts) to Wheeling Jesuit. It was the first time in the history of the award that the recipient did not sign at an NCAA Division I institution. Dickman also served as WJU’s NCAA Compliance Director from 2007-2013.

"It’s always a bittersweet move when you have to leave a university where you’ve spent so much time and developed so many great relationships. Wheeling Jesuit University and the basketball program will always be important to me," said Chad Dickman. "However, I’m definitely excited to start at Hood College and to have the chance to coach at such a great school in my hometown. I look forward to leading our golf program and having the unique opportunity to coach with my father on the men’s basketball staff. I plan on doing everything in my power to help take Hood athletics to the next level."

Dickman came to WJU after a one-year stay at his alma mater, St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania as an assistant coach, where he helped lead the Bearcats to a 25-7 record and a spot in the NAIA Sweet 16.

The local product played high school basketball for his father at Governor Thomas Johnson High School. While there, he helped the Patriots win the 1997 State Championship and led the team to the 1998 State Final Four, earning all-state honors his senior year.

Dickman continued his playing career at St. Vincent from 1998-2002, scoring 1,279 points, currently ranked 11th in school history. He also earned all-conference honors his junior and senior year. Dickman led the Bearcats to the NAIA Tournament twice, reaching the Elite 8 in 2002.

Dickman received a bachelor’s degree in finance from St. Vincent in 2002 and earned his MBA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2004.
