Navarro College hired Cody Hopkins as its new basketball assistant, according to assistant athletic director and head basketball coach Michael Landers.
Landers announced Thursday, March 15, on his Twitter account that he was “very excited” Hopkins had joined the staff. “He is going to be great for our program, players and community. Best commit of the year for the Bulldogs.”
Hopkins served as director of basketball operations at the University of New Mexico under coach Craig Neal. Previously, Hopkins served stints as an assistant at UT-Pan American, The University of North Texas and also at Texas Christian University during the Horned Frogs’ final three seasons in the Mountain West Conference.
Hopkins attended Northern Oklahoma College, where he earned all-conference honors. He finished his playing career at Northeastern State, Ok., and holds a bachelor’s degree from the Tahlequah, Ok.., based school in Health and Human performance.
He is the son of former Sam Houston State University and Texas A&M-Kingsville head basketball coach Jerry Hopkins.
Hopkins replaces Scott Monarch, who was hired as the men’s basketball coach at Grayson County Community College, which will re-launch its program in the 2018-19 season after funding issues prompted its discontinuation in 2011. Monarch will coach the Vikings; former Trinity Valley and Hill women’s coach Bill Damuth will direct the women’s program. Monarch and Damuth were introduced during a February 15 press conference
