The Merrimack Athletic Department announced that head men’s basketball coach Bert Hammel will step down and not return for the 2016-17 season. A search for his successor will begin immediately.
Hammel concluded his 36th season in 2015-16 as head coach of Merrimack with 526 career wins, 13th among Division II active coaches and 40th all-time in Division II. Over that period, he guided the Warriors to six NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2009-10, and two Northeast-10 Championships, most recently in 1999-2000. Hammel has coached seven All-Americans and 22 all-conference selections.
“We are grateful to Bert for his years of dedication to the Merrimack men’s basketball program,” stated Director of Athletics, Jeremy Gibson. “He leaves at Merrimack, on the court that bears his name, a proud legacy of developing outstanding citizens through the lessons of athletic participation.”
