The BMCC Athletic Department has named Tommy Guerin as the Head Coach of the Panthers men’s basketball team prior to the beginning of the 2016-17 season.

“I am happy with what he has accomplished as an assistant coach for us last year,” said Steve Kelly, Director of Athletics for BMCC. “With his commitment to the team and basketball knowledge he will be an asset to the program. We are looking forward to watching him have a successful season as head coach for BMCC”

Guerin joined the BMCC men’s basketball staff ahead of the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach. In his first year with the team, he helped guide the Panthers to a 15 win season and CUNYAC Championship appearance. During his tenure as assistant coach, Panthers players received a number of accolades, including NJCAA Player of the Week and two CUNYAC All-Stars.

“Coach Guerin brings a wealth of basketball knowledge to BMCC,” commented his predecessor Nolan Adams. “He is a great basketball coach but an even better person. I know that with Tommy at the helm of the men’s basketball program, the student athletes will not only enjoy on the court success, but he will help them succeed and grow in the real world.”

Following a successful one-year stint as the head men’s basketball coach at Division III NYU-Poly, Guerin took a position as an assistant coach at Mercy College. In his only season with Mercy, he helped the team nearly triple the win total from the previous season.

When Guerin took the helm at NYU-Poly, he became one of the youngest men’s basketball coaches in the NCAA. Over the course of his three years on campus, including his two as an assistant, the program doubled its win total from the previous three seasons. In the final year of the men’s basketball program, Guerin led the team to the school’s best finish in the Skyline conference in the last five years, and produced one second team All-Skyline performer. As an assistant at NYU-Poly, Guerin helped put together two recruiting classes that would produce the first and second Skyline Conference Rookie of the Years in program history. These classes were made of one Skyline Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year, a Second Team All-Skyline recipient and five different Skyline Conference Rookies of the Week.

Prior to joining the coaching fraternity, Guerin starred at Brooklyn College where he was a four-year starter and three-year captain. As a guard at Brooklyn College, Guerin earned the 2007 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year and helped lead Brooklyn to the 2009 and 2010 CUNYAC Tournament championships and berths in the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Tournaments. He finished his collegiate career with over 1000 points and ranked among the top 5 passers in school history with over 300 assists. In 2010, Guerin graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Adaptive Physical Education from Brooklyn College.
