HOT: Combs to Carroll U.

Wayne State College Director of Athletics Mike Powicki announced that head men’s basketball coach Paul Combs has resigned his position at the school and accepted the head men’s basketball position at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Combs spent four seasons as head coach at Wayne State College, compiling a 54-58 overall record and a 39-47 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. He led the Wildcats this past season to a 17-12 record, going 11-11 in the NSIC. It was the first winning season for the Wildcats since the 2007-08 campaign and the 17 wins were the most by a Wayne State men’s basketball team since the 1999-2000 season when WSC went 26-6 in Greg McDermott’s final season with the Wildcats. Under Combs, the Wildcats were 14-15 in 2009-10, 13-14 in 2010-11, 10-17 in 2011-12 and 17-12 this season.

Combs’ trademark at Wayne State was defense as the Wildcats led the NSIC in scoring defense in three of his four seasons at the school while his 2009-10 team (14-15) set a new school record for field goal percentage in a season making 49.5 percent.

"My family and I will forever be grateful to the WSC administration for welcoming us into the Wildcat athletic family," said Combs. "After much consideration, the opportunity to move home and have our three young kids be closer to family was a very important factor in our final decision. We leave a WSC team with great returning leadership that is extremely hungry to continue the strong momentum from this past season both on and off the court. We have a community here in Wayne full of close friends with relationships that will last a lifetime."

"Coach Combs was a true professional and went about his business with the utmost integrity," said Director of Athletics Mike Powicki. "We thank Paul for his time here at Wayne State and wish he and his family the best in the future. We now move our focus to finding new leadership for our men’s basketball program and a national search for our next head men’s basketball coach will begin immediately."
