HOT: Unger Resigns as Head Basketball Coach at DII Belmont Abbey

Belmont Abbey College Athletic Director, Stephen Miss, announced today the resignation of Men’s Basketball Head Coach Martin Unger, effective the end of spring semester.

“On behalf of the College, I wish to extend our appreciation and gratitude to Coach Unger for his dedicated service to the formation and development of our students over the course of his tenure,” said Miss.  “Martin is a man of integrity, and we wish him and his family well in all future endeavors.”

Unger recently completed his second season as the Abbey’s Men’s Basketball Head Coach, and under his leadership, the Crusaders compiled an 11-45 overall record.  Unger also served for two years as Miss’ associate head coach and, during his first year at the Abbey, helped guide the program to the NCAA tournament.

“I’m proud of how hard we worked during my four years here at Belmont Abbey to improve every single day both on and off the court,” Unger said.  “I believe we have built a foundation that will enable future success and am thankful to the Abbey for the opportunity I was afforded.” Going forward, Unger intends to remain in the coaching profession.

A national search for a new head men’s basketball coach will commence immediately, and Belmont Abbey College seeks to fill the opening as soon as possible.  The ideal candidate will possess an authentic appreciation of the institution’s mission and character as a distinctively Catholic and Benedictine college as well as the ability to articulate a vision of sport as a means for developing virtue.
