Howard announces staff changes at La Salle

La Salle University head men’s basketball coach Ashley Howard announced that both John Cox and Mike Doyle have transitioned into new roles within the program.

Cox, who operated as the Director of Basketball Operations over the course of last season, will now be the Director of Player Development, Scouting and Analytics.

“In Coach Cox’s first year in our program, he has built tremendous relationships with our players and will thrive in this new role which focuses on the development of our student-athletes both on and off the court,” said Howard.

Cox joined the staff in 2020-21 after an extended professional career in both Europe and South America. The Caracas, Venezuelan native played locally in high school for George Washington Carver, finishing his high school career with 1,798 points with an average of 29 points per game before playing college ball at the University of San Francisco. His 1,540 points ranks ninth in program history and the 2004-05 First Team All-WCC honoree was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 2019.

Mike Doyle replaces Cox in the vacated Director of Basketball Operations role, having been a graduate manager on the staff for the past two seasons.

“Mike recently completed his master’s in education as a graduate manager,” said Howard. “During the last two years, Mike has shown to be a tireless worker who is an invaluable asset to our program.”

Doyle enters his third year on the staff, coming to the Explorers after a successful playing career at Cabrini University. Doyle played in 85 games in his career and was a member of two teams that made the NCAA Tournament. Doyle received his Master’s Degree in Education at La Salle in the spring of 2021.

“I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity Coach Howard has given me,” said Doyle. “I am looking forward to continuing to serve our student-athletes and this program.”

Doyle comes from a background of coaching, his family having coaching ties in the Philadelphia area spanning over five decades. His grandfather Jim Boyle played for St. Joe’s before a nine-year stint in charge of the Hawks from 1981-1990, where he received A-10 Coach of the Year recognition in 1986. He is the son of Mike Doyle, who also spent a prolonged period on the sidelines on the St. Joe’s coaching staff from 1989-1993 before returning to the program as an assistant coach from 1997 to 2002.
