Howard Community College hires Joel Dearring to be Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Joel Dearring was recently named men’s basketball head coach for Howard Community College (HCC).

Dearring will lead a Dragons’ program, which finished 4-19 overall and 2-12 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO).

“I aim to develop student athletes to reach their potential,” said Dearring. “I am looking forward to positive support from the students, faculty, and staff, and I look to achieve great things here at HCC.”

Dearring was the associate boys basketball head coach at Fairmont Heights High School, where he won a Maryland state championship. Dearring was also the men’s basketball head coach at Chesapeake College and assistant coach at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC).

Dearring earned an associate degree in general studies from PGCC, a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism at Bowie State University, and a Master of Science in athletic administration and coaching from Western Kentucky University. Dearring’s accomplishments include receiving the Recognition of Distinguished Service award from PGCC and being named a member of PGCC’s Fabulous 50 Alumni. He was the only community college men’s assistant coach to participate in the NCAA’s “Achieving Coaching Excellence” program in 2007.

“I believe that Joel will be a quality leader of our men’s basketball program,” said HCC Athletic Director Diane Schumacher. “He has valuable coaching experience in the MDJUCO, at both Chesapeake and Prince George’s.”
