Hutchins promoted to Associate Head Basketball Coach at Dartmouth

Dartmouth men’s basketball head coach David McLaughlin announced that his top assistant, Pete Hutchins, has been promoted to associate head coach. Both McLaughlin and Hutchins just completed their third year with the Big Green.

“Pete clearly understands Dartmouth, the culture we are actively building and the importance of having relationships with our guys as well as a presence throughout our campus community,” McLaughlin said. “He has played an integral role in our progress through our first three seasons. Pete is an intrinsically motivated, creative and highly communicative coach who works at his craft daily. He sets a great example for our players and he has earned this opportunity. I am excited for Pete, and am looking forward to working with him and the rest of our staff as we continue to build the Dartmouth basketball program!”

With Hutchins working by McLaughlin’s side, the coaching staff guided Dartmouth to a KenPom.com team ranking that was 79 spots higher than last year. As a team, the Big Green led the Ivy League in fewest turnovers committed (12.1 per game, their second-lowest figure in the last 35 years) and was the second-most effective conference team at keeping opponents off the offensive glass.

Dartmouth also set a school record for 3-pointers made in a season (264), posted its highest scoring average in 30 years (72.0 ppg), best assist-to-turnover ratio in 31 years (1.17), highest field goal percentage in 22 years (.452) and best 3-point percentage defense in 18 years (.329).

Among the individual accomplishments this season was sophomore forward Chris Knight being selected to the All-Ivy League Second Team as he ranked fifth in the conference in scoring (15.4 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (6.8 rpg). Junior guard Brendan Barry is ranked among the dozen most-accurate 3-point shooters in the country at 44.5 percent, and junior James Foye demonstrated his excellence on and off the court by being the first Dartmouth men’s basketball player in 22 years to be selected an Academic All-American.
