Idaho State Announces Coaching Staff

Idaho State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ryan Looney has finalized his coaching staff. Joining Looney in Pocatello is Jared Phay as Associate Head Coach, Joe White and Chris McMillian as assistant coaches and Davis Furman as a graduate assistant.

“We hit a homerun with our staff,” Looney said. “They are great additions to Idaho State University. Our campus and community will fall in love with them. This group is very diverse. They are hard workers, great recruiters and are extremely loyal. Our student-athletes will enjoy working with them every day.”

Phay comes to Idaho State with 15 years of head coaching experience.  He has spent the last five years as the head coach at College of Southern Idaho. This past year CSI went 24-8 and over his career in Twin Falls, CSI had a record of 136-33. Phay led the Golden Eagles to a 31-3 record, a Scenic West Athletic Conference Championship, a Region 18 Championship and a district championship in 2014-15. The 2017-18 season saw CSI finish second at the NJCAA national tournament. Phay’s teams have a reputation for academic excellence. During his tenure CSI had the seventh-best GPA in 2014-15 and the second-highest GPA in 2016-17.

Prior to coming to CSI, Phay was the head coach at North Idaho for 10 years. During his time with the Cardinals, he was named Region 18 Coach of the Year three times. He won Scenic West Athletic Conference Championships in 2006, 2009 and 2010. The last seven years as head coach at North Idaho he posted 20 wins or more and has 221 career wins at North Idaho. In 2010-2011, Phay led the Cardinals to their first ever No. 1 national ranking in school history from Nov. 23, 2010 to Jan. 4, 2011.

White comes to Idaho State after serving as the Head Coach at Lane Community College. In 2014 White moved to Tacoma, Washington where he was the top assistant for three years at Tacoma Community College. He was pivotal in the success and rebuilding of the men’s basketball program and took them to the NWAC championship game in 2017. After his third season at Tacoma, White was hired as the top assistant at Lane Community College. After one year as the head assistant, White was named head coach. This past year his team went 27-4. White played at Southern Oregon from 2008-12.

McMillian comes to Idaho State after serving as the Director of Player Performance at Illinois Chicago. McMillian played at Wyoming from 1998-2003. He started all four years and led the Cowboys to two Mountain West Conference championships and one NCAA tournament berth.

McMillian spent the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at CSI. Prior to that he was at Hawaii from 2010-14 where he served as the men’s basketball strength coach and video coordinator for two years and the Director of Basketball Operations for two years.

Furman spent last year working with Looney at Point Loma. Prior to coming to Point Loma he worked with the Butler basketball program. He earned his undergraduate degree from Butler in the spring of 2018.
