Indiana State Associate Head Coach Belcher Resigns

Indiana State head basketball coach Greg Lansing announced that Sycamore Basketball Associate Head Coach Marcus Belcher has resigned his position to pursue other professional opportunities. A national search is underway to find Belcher’s replacement.

“I just want to thank Marcus for everything he has done for our program,” coach Lansing said. “As the Associate Head Coach here he has been an integral part in all aspects of Sycamore Basketball. Most importantly, I have appreciated his friendship and being such a good person to be around every day. It hurts personally and professionally to lose someone as good as Marcus but that happens in this business. We truly wish Belch, Vanessa and my little buddy Bash nothing but the best.”

Belcher recently completed his eighth season at Indiana State and has spent the last two seasons as the associate head coach. His primary duties were the program’s recruiting and scheduling coordinator. During his time at ISU he coached 11 All-MVC honorees, including two-time first team selection Jake Odum. Brenton Scott was the 2015 MVC Freshman of the Year. Current players Jordan Barnes, Tyreke Key and Cooper Neese have each also picked up all-conference honors in the past year.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I will be leaving Indiana State University,” Belcher said. “My family and I have decided to pursue other coaching opportunities. I would like to thank Coach Lansing, the athletics staff, and the Terre Haute community for embracing my family and I over the past 8 years. Most importantly, i would like to thank the players. It has been a pleasure watching these young men grow both on and off the court. I am excited about the future of Sycamore Basketball. I truly believe that the pieces are in place for ISU to compete at a high level for years to come.”

In a coaching career that began in 2004 as an assistant at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, the Cougars made it to the Elite 8 of the NCAA DII Tournament in 2006. Belcher also made stops at Eastern Illinois, Evansville, and Southern Illinois.

He was the starting point guard on the 2002 SIU Sweet Sixteen squad that beat Texas Tech and Georgia to reach the second weekend of the tournament. That Saluki team went 28-8 and was the Missouri Valley Conference’s Co-Champion.

A graduate of Southern Illinois-Carbondale with a degree in Marketing, Belcher received his master’s in Sport Management from SIU-E in 2006. He is a native of Mexico, Mo., and is married to the former Vanessa Granger. They have a two-year old son, Sebastian.
