Garett Sherman has been named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Gordon State College. He replaces Izzy Ingle who has accepted a job as head basketball coach at Timpanogos High School in Orem, Utah.
Sherman has been at Gordon State since 2012 serving as assistant coach to the men’s team and assistant professor of physical education. He came to Gordon from Alleghany College of Maryland where he served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach for four years and assistant men’s basketball coach for five years.
The Cumberland, Maryland native attended Frostburg State University where he earned his undergraduate degree in health and physical education and a master’s degree in administrative supervision. “I am excited about the opportunity to serve as head coach,” Sherman said. “We are working on developing a strong team and welcoming new Highlanders to the court.”
The team will begin conditioning once they return to school in August. The season schedule is not yet set. Ingle, who was tasked with rebuilding the men’s basketball program when he was hired in 2007, said leaving Gordon is bittersweet. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last seven years and know the program is in good hands,” Ingle said.
Athletic Director Todd Davis had the same reaction when Ingle told him the news. "I couldn’t have asked for a better person to begin and direct our men’s basketball program when the sport was brought back on campus," said Davis. "Even at a young age for a head coach, the players always respected his ability to get the job done. Coach Ingle will always be a part of the athletic history at Gordon State College!"
It’s now time to look to a new leader of the men’s basketball program and Davis is excited about the new era soon to be ushered in by Garett Sherman. "I have complete confidence in him and I know he’s ready for the task," exclaimed Davis. "It will be a smooth transition for our players and I know Gordon State College men’s basketball will thrive under his leadership."
While at Alleghany, Sherman was named Maryland JUCO Coach of the Year on two different occasions and earned Region XX Coach of the Year honors twice. During the 2010-11 season, the team set a school record with 30 wins and capped off the year with a 6th place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
