Momentum is building around the Voorhees University Men’s Basketball program as Derrick Mitchell officially steps into the role of Head Coach, bringing with him a track record of success and a clear vision for the future.
Mitchell is no stranger to winning. During his time leading the program as interim head coach this past season, he guided the team to an impressive second-round appearance in the HBCU conference tournament an achievement that signaled both resilience and potential. His résumé also includes a standout 2019 campaign during his previous tenure then Voorhees College which is known now as Voorhees University, where he captured the AII conference championship and finished with a stellar 24–9 record.
Now, with the interim tag removed, Mitchell is embracing the responsibility of leading the program full-time. “I am truly honored and energized to accept the position of Head Men’s Basketball Coach,” Mitchell said. “This isn’t just a title it’s a responsibility, a mission, and an opportunity to build something special together.” From the outset, Mitchell is setting the tone for what he expects: a program rooted in discipline, accountability, and relentless effort. His philosophy goes beyond wins and losses, focusing on a culture that shapes both athletes and individuals.
“We will compete with passion, represent with pride, and pursue excellence in everything we do on and off the court,” he said.
At the heart of his approach is a mindset he believes will define the team’s identity moving forward. “Success isn’t given it’s earned every single day you choose to outwork yesterday.”
Mitchell’s vision centers on building a culture where toughness and trust go hand in hand. He emphasized the importance of every player understanding their role, embracing hard work, and striving to exceed expectations.
“Great teams aren’t made of talent alone they’re built on commitment, sacrifice, and belief in each other,” he added. His message to players was equally direct and encouraging: a commitment to their growth not just as athletes, but as men. “To our players: I believe in you. I’m here to challenge you, support you, and help you become the best version of yourself.”
Mitchell also made it clear that the program’s connection to its supporters will be a key part of its identity. He called on fans and the surrounding community to rally behind the team as it enters this new chapter. “To our fans and community: get ready. We’re bringing energy, heart, and a brand of basketball you’ll be proud of.”
With a foundation built on preparation and belief, Mitchell is confident in what lies ahead. “When preparation meets opportunity, champions rise and we’re preparing to rise.”
With leadership established and a clear direction in place, one message rings loud and clear as the new era begins: Let’s get to work.
