The Benedictine University Department of Athletics has announced the appointment of Jordan Townsend to the position of head men’s basketball coach.
“My family and I are beyond excited to be continuing at Benedictine University,” Townsend said. “I am so grateful for this opportunity and we are thrilled to continue building our life here. I want to thank President Gregory, Mark McHorney and Paul Nelson for entrusting me with the future of the Eagles.”
Townsend had been serving as the interim head coach after taking over last spring. Benedictine is 5-8 this year with a 3-3 mark in the NACC. The team faced one of the hardest non-conference schedules since the advancing to the national championship in 2016 with games against Wheaton, currently ranked 12th in the country, and Trine, who sits 25th in the latest D3hoops.com poll. The combined record of the seven non-conference opponents is currently 60-29.
Among the eight losses on the year, Benedictine has been competitive in every contest, holding second half leads in four of those games. Benedictine has played seven games decided by 10 points or less and six decided by five or less. Benedictine currently ranks second in the conference in rebound margin at +4.5. The team also sits second in the conference in field goal percentage at .485. Freshman Andrew Stokes leads the conference in field goal percentage and is ninth in free throw percentage and 13th in scoring. Stokes is one of four freshmen in the current rotation. Nick Kosich, who recently made his 75th career start, sits second in assist/turnover ratio. Marvin Agwomoh, one of the most exciting players in the conference, ranks fourth in field goal percentage.
More importantly than success on the floor, Benedictine has also excelled in the classroom in a short period of time, posting a collective team GPA over 3.2. The roster featured 11 players that recorded a GPA of 3.4 or better.
The first game with Townsend as the official head coach takes place on Saturday afternoon against St. Norbert.
