The search to replace Todd Howard at IUPUI seems to be winding down. The three names that I’ve heard the most surrounding the Jaguars vacancy all have very strong Indiana ties. They are:
• Calbert Chaney – assistant coach St Louis. An Evansville, IN native – was a three time All-American and National Player of the Year at Indiana under Bob Knight. Played in the NBA for 13 seasons. Worked on Tom Crean’s staff at Indiana before joining Jim Crews staff at SLU last summer.
• Jason Gardner – assistant coach Memphis. An Indianapolis native. 1998-99 Mr. Basketball for the state of Indiana (North Central HS). Played overseas from 2003-11 after a standout career at Arizona. Joined Josh Pastner’s staff at Memphis last summer after spending two seasons on the staff at Loyola (IL).
• Michael Lewis – Assistant coach Butler. A very good name in Indiana basketball circles. The 13th all-time leading scorer in Indiana HS basketball history (Jasper HS) – played for Bob Knight at Indiana. Also worked for Brad Stevens while at Butler.
