Mississippi Valley State University Athletics has announced that head men’s basketball coach George Ivory will not be returning next season.
“MVSU Athletics would like to thank Coach Ivory for his unwavering contributions to Mississippi Valley State University as both a student-athlete and head coach,” said Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson. “His impact on the institution spans decades and reflects a lasting commitment to the Delta Devils men’s basketball program.”
Ivory was announced as the 12th head men’s basketball coach in program history on March 14, 2022. He returned to Mississippi Valley State after a successful run as head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he led the Golden Lions for 13 seasons. Prior to his tenure at UAPB, Ivory also served as an assistant coach at Mississippi Valley State, his alma mater, where he graduated in 1988.
One of the most decorated players in Mississippi Valley State men’s basketball history, George Ivory‘s name remains etched throughout the program’s record book. He stands as MVSU’s all-time career assists leader with 547 and holds the program record for assists per game at 4.8. Ivory also owns the school mark for best three-point percentage in a single season after shooting 51.6 percent (109-of-211) in 1987. Since being named head coach at Mississippi Valley State, he compiled an overall record of 12-118.
In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments and legacy in Southwestern Athletic Conference basketball, Ivory was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame.

A national search for the program’s next head men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
