J.R. Reynolds Joins SEMO Men’s Basketball Staff as Assistant Coach

Southeast Missouri hired J.R. Reynolds as an assistant coach Monday.

Reynolds was an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) for the last five seasons. He coached the forwards and handled recruiting among other duties during his stint with the RedHawks.

Before Miami, Reynolds spent four seasons as an assistant coach in the Ohio Valley Conference at Eastern Illinois, his alma mater. He helped the Panthers advance to the 2014 OVC Tournament as EIU made back-to-back tournament appearances for just the second time in 11 years. In 2015, Reynolds helped guide the Panthers to their second winning season in 14 years. He was on the coaching staff when EIU made the College Insiders.com Postseason Tournament where the Panthers beat Oakland in the opening round for the program’s first NCAA Division I postseason win.

“J.R. is a veteran assistant that not only has OVC coaching experience, but is also a former player in the conference at EIU,” said Head Coach Brad Korn. “I was able to meet J.R. during his time at Southeastern Illinois College when he worked for Todd Franklin as an assistant coach. We welcome his knowledge and experience to our staff and look forward to him being a major asset to this program as we move SEMO to the top of the OVC. He has all the tools needed to be an elite coach for us, including recruiting, scouting, individual skill instruction and community engagement to go along with his energy and communication skills. We are excited to have his wife (Leah) and sons (Cameron and Jay) join the Redhawk Family.”

Prior to EIU, Reynolds worked three seasons as a graduate assistant at Purdue. Working with Head Coach Matt Painter, the Boilermakers compiled a record of 77-27 while he was on staff. The Boilermakers won the Big 10 and made the Sweet 16 in Reynolds’ first year in that role.

Reynolds started his coaching career as an assistant at Southeastern Illinois College from 2004-07, helping lead the team to three straight 20-win seasons for junior college Hall of Fame coach Todd Franklin.

He graduated from EIU in 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in economics and earned a Master’s Degree from Purdue in 2012.
