Jacksonville men’s basketball head coach Jordan Mincy has announced that Mychal Covington has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Covington most recently coached for the 2024 NCAA Tournament Oakland Grizzlies and was instrumental in the team’s upset victory over the three-seeded Kentucky in the Round of 64.

Prior to coaching at Oakland under coach Greg Kampe, Covington played under Kampe from 1998-2002. The Pontiac, Michigan native joined the Grizzlies’ staff in August 2017. Prior to his tenure at Oakland, Covington dedicated 11 years to coaching and working at various institutions such as Pontiac High School, Melvindale Academy for Business and Technology, and Cornerstone Health and Technology High School. Additionally, he served as the head coach for six years at the helm of the AAU’s Detroit Stars Basketball Club.

As a point guard at Oakland, Covington showcased his pass-first philosophy, culminating in an impressive senior season where he ranked eighth in the country with 7.1 assists per game. His career total of 514 assists is the fifth all-time in program history. Covington played a pivotal role in leading the Golden Grizzlies to the Mid-Con regular season championship during their inaugural year in Division I competition in 1999-2000.

Covington graduated from Oakland in 2022 with his degree in Communication/Business.
