University at Buffalo head men’s basketball coach Nate Oats has named Jamie Quarles as assistant coach. Quarles was a long-time assistant coach at Augusta University where he was most recently named one of the Top 10 Young Professionals To Watch by Augusta Magazine.
After playing four seasons at Augusta from 2004-08, Quarles picked up the clipboard and joined the coaching staff on August 30, 2011. Quarles had been the top assistant for six seasons and has helped keep the Augusta Jaguars in the national spotlight.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Jamie to our staff,” said Oats. “He is a rising star in the business and he will build great relationships with our players. Like in recruiting, we want to bring in people from winning programs and we have definitely done that with Jamie. He is sharp, has a great work ethic, and we are thrilled to bring him in to the UB Basketball family.”
Quarles aided the Jags to a 17-11 overall record (12-6 in PBC) during his first year coaching in 2011-12 and Augusta had a winning season in each year Quarles was on staff.
Augusta won the 2017 Peach Belt Conference East Division title and had the best regular-season record across the entire league in the 2016-17 season. A senior in 2016-17, Keshun Sherrill capped off a historic career by becoming the PBC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,333 points. He was a four-time All-American and was named the NCAA Southeast Region and PBC Player of the Year in 2017
Competing as Augusta University for the first time in the 2015-16 season, the Jaguars earned a No. 10 NCAA Southeast Region ranking and HERO Sports named Augusta University men’s hoops the Best Program in the State. The Jags reached the PBC Tournament Championship game and Keshun Sherrill was named All-District and All-Conference as he surpassed career 1,000 points.
In 2014-15, Quarles helped coached the Jags to a 23-7 overall record and a 15-4 mark in the Peach Belt. The team reached its 11th NCAA Tournament all time. Sherrill was named All-American and All-District by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC), and earned All-Region by Daktronics and All-Conference for the Peach Belt.
In 2012-13, he aided a team that began the year on a 6-0 run and eventually made a quarterfinal appearance at the PBC Tournament. Helping coach the team as Georgia Regents University for the first time, the Jags finished 24-8 overall and 15-4 in the Peach Belt Conference, taking second place in the East Division.
Sherrill was named Peach Belt Freshman of the Year, while senior KJ Sherrill and Ryan Weems earned all-conference honors. The Jags reached their 10th NCAA Tournament – beating Anderson in the quarterfinals at the buzzer to advance to the NCAA Southeast Regional Semifinals.
Quarles was a senior on the 2007-08 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s National Championship game and during his career he was part of 85 victories.
A native of Augusta, Ga., Quarles spent the 2009-10 season at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., where he served as head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball (Red) team and a health and physical education teacher. Under his leadership, Oak Hill posted a 44-16 record.
A 2008 graduate of Augusta State University with a B.S. in Education, Quarles achieved his master’s degree in Kinesiology & Health Science in May 2013.
