Jason Owens Named Southeast Missouri Assistant Coach

Southeast Missouri hired Jason Owens as an assistant men’s basketball coach Monday.

Owens joins the Redhawks after working two years as an assistant coach on Kim Anderson’s staff at Pittsburg State.

“We are fortunate to be adding Coach Owens to our staff and family,” said SEMO head coach Rick Ray. “In our profession, we come in contact with a multitude of people in recruiting efforts across the country. I was thoroughly impressed with how Jason wasn’t looking out for himself or to advance his career off the backs of the student-athletes. He simply wanted what was best for his players and to do anything he could to help them. I have a ton of respect for the people that he has worked for like Coach Pat Smith at Moberly Area Community College, and they think the world of Coach Owens and the job he did for them. I can’t wait for him to start working with our current players and staff!”

Owens spent three seasons at Moberly Area CC before his time at Pittsburg State. He helped the Greyhounds compile a combined record of 72-26. Moberly won Region 16 and District 5 titles, and made an NJCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2015-16. The Greyhounds went 27-5 and won a Region 16 regular season title in 2016-17. Owens coached a total of 24 players at Moberly that went on to play NCAA Division I or NCAA Division II basketball.

“I’m definitely blessed to work with Coach Ray and his staff,” said Owens. “I’m excited and thankful for this opportunity Coach Ray has given to me. I am ready to roll up my sleeves and work hard to help make our guys and this program better every day.”

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Owens also served as an assistant coach at Siena Heights (Mich.) University from 2007-2010. He coached four NAIA All-Americans and helped lead the Saints to a 44-20 record during his tenure there. Owens worked as the junior varsity head coach at Siena Heights, as well.

Owens began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas in 2006-07.

He played basketball four years at Siena Heights University, where he was a two-year captain and all-conference honoree for the Saints. Owens earned a bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies at Siena Heights in 2006.

Owens completes SEMO’s men’s basketball coaching staff for the upcoming 2019-20 campaign.
