Jeff Massey Promoted to Associate Head Coach at Toledo

University of Toledo men’s basketball assistant coach Jeff Massey has been promoted to associate head coach, Head Basketball Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced today.

“Jeff has been tremendous for Toledo Basketball since he joined our program five years ago.” Kowalczyk said. “He is a very good coach, an extremely efficient and effective recruiter and an unbelievable mentor to the men we have in our program. He’s certainly earned this promotion and I look forward to having him impact our program for years to come.”

Massey completed his fifth season with the Rockets’ basketball program this past March and possesses 14 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level. Prior to coming to Toledo, he served as assistant coach at St. Bonaventure (2007-14) and Robert Morris (2005-07).

“I am very thankful for my promotion and happy to be a part of a program that has enjoyed great success,” Massey said. “My family loves being a part of the Toledo community, and I want to keep doing everything I can to continue our momentum and help our guys achieve their goals on and off the court.”

Massey has played an important role in helping the Rockets post an impressive 48-19 (.716) record over the last two seasons en route to capturing back-to-back outright Mid-American Conference West Division titles. During his five seasons on the Toledo bench, the Rockets have posted a 102-64 (.614) win-loss mark and has had 10 different players earn all-league honors. Tre’Shaun Fletcher highlighted the honorees by being named the 2018 MAC Player of the Year.

During his time in Olean, N.Y., Massey helped turn St. Bonaventure into a consistent winner in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Bonnies improved their conference win total in his first five seasons, starting in 2007-08 and culminating with an NCAA Tournament trip in the 2011-12 campaign. Massey played a key role in the development of 2012 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and AP Honorable Mention All-American Andrew Nicholson. The 6-foot-9 Nicholson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the first round (No. 19 overall) of the 2012 NBA Draft.

An Elkhart, Ind. native, Massey is a 1995 graduate of Xavier University. During his time with the Musketeers, Massey was named the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year in 1993-94, when he averaged 12.7 ppg and 2.1 rpg and helped guide Xavier to the third round of the NIT. In his senior season, Massey served as team captain and led the Musketeers in scoring (18.9 ppg), steals, free throw percentage and blocked shots as Xavier advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Massey holds a master’s degree in counseling from Xavier as well. He and his wife Jonelle have two daughters, Aubrey (11) and Kayla (8).
