Former Oglethorpe guard Ryan Jenei has been named assistant men’s basketball coach, as announced by Head Coach Philip Ponder. Jenei is a 2022 graduate of Oglethorpe and joins the Stormy Petrel staff after a stellar five-year playing career.
Jenei will serve the men’s basketball program in all areas, including player development, administrative duties, on-court instruction, scouting and recruiting.
“I am excited to have Ryan come on board as assistant coach,” said Ponder. “He had a really good five-year career as a player, and he displayed great work ethic, leadership and dependability over the course of that career. I expect those qualities to carry over into the coaching side.”
Jenei came to Oglethorpe in 2018 and enjoyed a playing career that spanned five seasons, including the shortened 2020-21 season. Jenei scored 856 career points with 443 career rebounds while adding 143 assists and 74 steals. He played in 119 games over the course of his career, and he earned Southern Athletic Association distinction as an academic all-conference honoree all five years.
“I would like to thank Coach Ponder for not only being the first coach to give me a chance to play college basketball, but now also being the first coach to give me an opportunity to help jumpstart my coaching career,” Jenei said. “I look forward to learning from him and helping this program grow to become better each and every year.”
Jenei was an immediate contributor coming in as a freshman in 2018-19, appearing in all 27 games as the team’s top freshman scorer with 210 points in his first season.
“Ryan is a basketball junkie, in tune with the local AAU and high school scene, and familiar with our offensive and defensive systems,” added Ponder. “We have had a good track record with former players as assistant coaches, and I think he will continue that tradition and do a great job.”
Jenei earned his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Oglethorpe in 2022. He also holds a business analytics certificate.
