Emporia State men’s basketball coach Craig Doty has added Jerel Jernigan to his coaching staff. Jernigan replaces Chase Dippel who was announced as the lead assistant at Missouri Baptist this week.
“Energy, charisma, and relationships are the three words that stood out to me when talking to the people who work with Coach Jernigan on a daily basis,” said Doty. “This makes him a great fit for Emporia State University and our men’s basketball program.”
Jernigan has spent the last two years at North Iowa Area CC where he was active in recruiting, practice implementation, game planning, fundraising and scouting, as well as being in charge of perimeter player development, and strength and conditioning. During his two years on staff the Trojans went 50-12 and were ranked #1 in the nation in NJCAA Division II at one point last season.
“I’m extremely excited to be joining the Hornet coaching staff and looking forward to getting started, we’re going to do some great things here,” said Jernigan. “I would like to give a special thanks to my alma mater North Iowa Area Community college and that staff for the last two years.”
Jernigan was a two-time honorable mention All-Region selection as he scored 534 career points at NIACC from 2009-11. He also had 164 assists, 93 steals and 93 made three-point goals in his two seasons.
A December 2014, Jernigan is a December 2014 graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Administration. He graduated from NIACC with an associates of arts degree in 2011.
Jernigan has organized and held the Stop the Violence Summer Basketball class in his hometown of Muncie, Ind. since 2015. He also is a committee member organizing Muncie’s Black History Month Community All Star game the past two years. He attended high school at Indiana’s prestigious power house Muncie Central HS.
“Coach Jernigan will be involved in all facets of our program including player development, game planning, scouting, academic monitoring, and more,” said Doty. “We are really excited that he is joining our family.”
