The Departments of Intercollegiate Athletics and Kinesiology are seeking an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach (Assistant Coach, CC003) and a Lecturer (TL020). This position will be split as 67% Assistant Coach and 33% as a Lecturer in Kinesiology.

This position reports to the Head Coach and the Kinesiology Department Chair. The selected candidate will maintain a good working relationship with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, Kinesiology Department Chair, Athletics Trainers, Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Athletics Department Support Staff and other Department and University Staff.

Academic Staff positions are provided fixed-term appointments with annual renewals unless otherwise noted. Reappointments for subsequent terms is dependent upon performance, University funding and external forces.

The anticipated start date for this position is August 26, 2024.

JOB DETAILS:

The Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach will assist the Head Coach in the planning, recruiting, coaching, developing, implementing, communication and administering of his/her program to achieve University and Department objectives and fulfill teaching duties within the Kinesiology Department. Goals and objectives are to be developed prior to the beginning of each season with the Head Coach. The successful candidate will exhibit behavior that enhances the respect for the student-athletes, the athletics program, the University, and yourself in the conduct of your professional responsibilities. This position is required to assist in the direction and control of the program in accordance with NCAA, WIAC, and University rules and regulations. Violation of University, NCAA or Conference rules on the part of Athletic Department personnel may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

The Lecturer portion of this position will teach undergraduate courses supporting the Physical Education Teacher Education program, the Athletic Coaching Education minor, and/or the Human Performance major. This position may supervise student field study and/or student teaching placements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sport & Recreation Administration or a related field by time start of contract date.
  2. Successful men’s basketball coaching experience required.
  3. Excellent written and oral skills, knowledge of computer applications and software packages, and organizational abilities.
  4. Must be able to work weekends/evenings and travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Three years teaching experience (K-12) in Physical Education, Health Education, or a related field and WI teaching license.

  1.  Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  2. Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION OF PROGRAM/COACHING:

  1. Adhere to all rules and guidelines of the NCAA, WIAC and University.
  2. Assist head coach to plan and direct the development of student-athletes in relation to general and specific skills necessary for successful competition.
  3. Adhere to all athletic training measures for the safety and welfare of student-athletes.
  4. Assist with scheduling, conduct, and management of intercollegiate athletics contests.
  5. Assist with Instructing student-athletes in the principles and rules of the sport, WIAC and University policies.
  6. Schedule, prepare, and supervise all team practices, travel and activities in the absence of the head coach.
  7. Attend staff meetings/professional development seminars, and assist with total program issues.
  8. Represent the head coach at WIAC and NCAA meetings in their absence.
  9. Assist head coach to ensure the safety, maintenance and preparation of the playing and practice areas for all student-athletes.
  10. Assist with the monitoring of the academic progress of the student-athletes on your team ensuring that normal progress is made toward the attainment of the degree.

RECRUITING:

  1. Assist with recruitment and recommendation of student-athletes to the University.
  2. Complete recruiting logs on a monthly basis.
  3. Interact with admissions personnel in the recruitment policies and procedures for the University.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Assist the head coach with fund raising projects needed to support program.
  2. Assist the head coach with support and promotion of sport.
  3. Assist with the total program support through Athletic Department activities and events.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION OF PROGRAM/TEACHING:

  1. Carry out teaching responsibilities within the Department of Kinesiology according to standards established by the department.
  2. Attend Departmental meetings and support Department outreaches.
  3. Maintain regular weekly office hours.

SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY:

  1. Attend job-related clinics and conferences.
  2. Maintain current membership in professional organizations.

UNIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY SERVICE:

  1. Serve on department and university committees as needed.
  2. Serve as a resource to the community in areas of expertise.
  3. Assist the head coach with the development of outreach activities which support and enhance the athletics program, individual sports, and University.
