The Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach (65%)/ Assistant Sports Information Director (35%) supports learning for assisting the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Sports Information Director with organizing, administrating and managing all aspects of the of the Aurora University NCAA Division III Men’s basketball program as well as the Athletic Department’s Sports Information program.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Supports the head coach of the sport by carrying out assigned responsibilities. Over 50% of this role is dedicated to coaching the position(s) or segments necessary as directed by the head coach.
  2. Assists with recruitment of individual student-athletes or territories as directed by the head coach.
  3. Understands and follows NCAA and conference rules and regulations. Follows NCAA rules as outlined in Bylaw 13 in the NCAA Division Ill Manual. Reports any alleged violations of NCAA, conference, or institutional rules and regulations.
  4. Assists student-athletes and their parents in understanding the educational programs and opportunities at Aurora University as well as the opportunities in the athletic program.
  5. Maintains high expectations for academic achievement. Monitors the academic progress of student-athletes.
  6. Keeps informed of contemporary trends, tactics, techniques and strategies, which includes developing a philosophy of what to teach and how to implement.
  7. Assists in the planning, implementation and evaluation of practices as necessary.
  8. Maintains self-control and poise; provides an example of sportsmanlike conduct for team members, officials, opponents and spectators.
  9. Attends athletic department meetings and university community meetings and functions.
  10. Handles confidential information with tact and discretion.
  11. Drives university or rental vehicles as needed for away contests.
  12. Performs special and/or additional duties as required by the Director of Athletics.
  13. Supports the Sports Information Director by carrying out assigned responsibilities.
  14. Assists in the management of the AU Spartans web presence and social media outlets, including maintaining and updating the athletic department website, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
  15. Assists in the monitoring of social media outlets in regards to Aurora Athletics with special attention paid to student athlete online posts and material.
  16. As assigned, develops team-specific and departmental recruiting guides, as well as outreach and promotional materials in conjunction with staff in University Communications.
  17. Assists in updating and archiving all team and departmental records and accomplishments.
  18. Assists in developing interest in and visibility of teams and athletic events internally and externally. Writes athletics news articles for print and digital communications efforts.
  19. As assigned, coordinates sports information staffing for taking and compiling statistics and reporting scores from athletic events.
  20. Attends (or coordinates student employee coverage of) all athletic events.
  21. Hires, trains and manages student employees.
  22. Develops roster sheet and game materials for athletic events.
  23. Coordinates marketing and promotion efforts for athletic programs and events.
  24. As assigned, creates and organizes athletic department promotional events, including theme-orientated games, fan giveaways and half-time events.
  25. Assists in coordinating all recaps, records and statistics for AU athletics, and communicates them as necessary to the public, the media, athletic conferences, upcoming competitors, NCAA, AU and other audiences in a timely and effective manner.

Essential Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience.

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written skills required
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a wide range of constituents: student-athletes, parents, coaches, media, alumni, administrators, support staff, campus community and the community at-large
  • Ability to set and achieve or exceed goals and meet deadlines, strong strategic thinking and problem solving abilities
  • General computer knowledge with a proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of social media outlets
