The Assistant Coach, Men’s Basketball identifies, recruits, coaches and retains student athletes. Schedules contests and participates in athletic development and fundraising activities for athletics programs, including making speeches. Promotes and oversees the academic well-being of student athletes. Reviews film to scout other teams and provides leadership for all aspects of the basketball program.

Essential Job Duties

•Provides assistance to the Men’s Basketball Head Coach with activities associated with the program and student athletes including, but not limited to, recruitment, on-the-floor coaching, video work, and community involvement.

•Provides leadership for all aspects of men’s basketball to ensure a highly competitive and successful program.

•Serves as a role model to mentor team members to develop and display appropriate behavior and sportsmanship expected of athletic teams and individuals representing FGCU.

•Observes athletes during practice and competition to identify opportunities for individual or team improvement. Teaches players specific tasks and skills before, during, and after practice.

•Schedules contests and reviews film to scout other teams.

•Supports and monitors academic performance and social development of the student athletes. Maintains discipline and development programs. Demonstrates concern for the health, safety and welfare of each student athlete. Enforces team discipline and policies by providing guidance and counsel.

•Assists with recruitment of new student athletes including, but not limited to, attends off-campus games for the purpose of contact and evaluation, manages recruitment material mailings, maintains contact and plans campus visits with prospective student athletes.

•Coordinates all enrollment activities of men’s basketball student athletes.

•Participates in athletic development and fundraising activities for athletics programs. Supports leadership development, team development, and community service.

•Complies with all University, Atlantic Sun Conference, or Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) regulations, as well as all NCAA rules and regulations. Remains current with all changes in NCAA, as well as changes to University, Atlantic Sun Conference and CCSA rules and regulations regarding intercollegiate athletics. This includes the requirement for self-reporting any possible rule violations and participation in the annual NCAA continuing education programs including passing the NCAA certification test. Further, you are advised that any violation of NCAA rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of all aspects of the sport of basketball and the ability to teach/coach collegiate student athletes toward acquisition of those skills.

Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations and a strong commitment to maintain compliance with those rules and regulations.

Knowledge of intercollegiate recruiting practices and an ability to identify athletic and academic talent.

Knowledge of student athlete intellectual, emotional and social development and an ability to guide athletes toward successful completion of an undergraduate degree while participating in intercollegiate athletics.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Strong organizational skills and an ability to use independent judgment and remain flexible while prioritizing tasks.

Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.

Ability to interact and represent FGCU professionally with a diverse constituency of students, faculty, alumni, and media.

Ability to adapt quickly to changing student needs and maintain consistent communication with supervisors and support staff in Athletic Department.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion at all times.

Required:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.

Three years of coaching experience at the high school level or above.

Successful experience as a graduate assistant or intern in an athletic program is acceptable for up to one year of the required experience.

Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within two months of employment.

Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout the country.

Preferred:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.

Three years collegiate coaching experience with demonstrated commitment to student athlete success, both academically and athletically, as well as demonstrated commitment to rules and policy compliance.
