Summary

The assistant men’s basketball coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in recruiting, training, and coaching members of the men’s basketball program. The assistant men’s basketball coach is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Illinois College, the Midwest Conference (MWC), and the NCAA. Illinois College is a member of the NCAA at the Division III level.

 

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate a high level of intercultural competence and the ability to work with diverse population
  • Ensure academic performance and personal development of student-athletes
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism toward student-athletes, other coaches, parents, administrators, and members of the community

 

 

Coaching (60%)

  • Teach and develop sport-specific skills in a safe and successful manner
  • Assist in monitoring academic performance and progress of the student-athletes in the men’s basketball program
  • Assume additional administrative responsibilities within the basketball program, as assigned by the Head Men’s Basketball Coach
  • Assist the men’s basketball coaching staff in the development of practice plans and strategy and be present at all practices to assist the men’s basketball staff
  • Provide specific skill development for one personnel group during break down sessions in practice
  • Assist in coaching all varsity contests, including traveling with the team to road contests
  • Assist in coaching all junior varsity contests, including traveling with the team to road contests
  • Aid in the development of scouting reports and film breakdown

 

Recruitment (30%)

  • Assist the men’s basketball program in meeting the recruitment, and retention goals set by the College
  • Assist in developing a positive campus experience for potential student-athletes who are visiting Illinois College
  • Assist in the maintenance of the recruiting database (FrontRush)
  • Serve as an active and engaging representative of the men’s basketball program in the campus community and the greater Jacksonville area

 

Administration (10%)

  • Assist in the coordination of team travel and meals
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Intercultural competency; ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability, required
  • Basketball coaching experience at the NCAA level, Division III, preferred
  • Recruiting experience at the collegiate level, Division III, preferred
  • Must understand and value the liberal arts experience for students at Illinois College
  • First Aid and AED certification, preferred
  • Knowledge of NCAA, Midwest Conference, and Illinois Colleges rules, regulations and guidelines
  • Ability to work weekdays, weekends, and some evenings
  • Passion and motivation to recruit student-athletes
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
