Responsibilities
The assistant coach for the men’s basketball program will be responsible for assisting the head coach in the mentoring of student athletes in a competitive environment while upholding the mission and vision of the men’s basketball program, the athletic department and Taylor University. The largest portion of the job responsibilities will be to assist with the instruction, teaching and evaluation of skills as instructed by the head coach. Other duties will include: assistance with game preparation, practice plan development, game film breakdown, scheduling, opponent evaluation, strategy development, recruiting and overall spiritual development and discipleship of the student athletes.
This position operates under the direct supervision of the head coach however some autonomy and individual judgement may be required or expected. Other duties would include: attendance at all departmental meetings, reading and operating according to the policies and procedures of the athletic department, communication and effective collaboration with the sports information and athletic training departments. Included in this position is responsibilities for assisting with the direction and supervision of four weeks of summer boys basketball camp.
A portion of this position’s full-time role will be responsible for home competition event management in the off-season which will include the following duties: pre-game set-up and post-game tear down for contest, communication with visiting teams and officials, management of student staff before, during and after contest, active supervision and monitoring during event, provide leadership in the event of an emergency situation, act as a mediator between the officials and the coaches, players, and spectators, and ensure a healthy and safe environment for all players, coaches, officials, and spectators.
Required Experience This position must hold a Bachelor’s degree however a Master’s degree would be preferred. The minimum level of experience would be no less than one to three years of assistant coaching experience at either the collegiate/high school level.
REQUIRED: This individual must have basketball coaching experience and be committed to a Christian lifestyle and coaching perspective. They should be able to demonstrate the ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes in the areas of skill development, and spiritual development.
PREFERRED: It would be preferred that this individual would have collegiate coaching experience and be able to demonstrate knowledge and/or experience with the development of an effective competitive and recruiting strategy that fits within the NAIA, League regulations and mission of the university. Experience with summer basketball camps would also be preferred.
