In the Basketball Research Fellowship, you will support the efforts of the Basketball Operations team by using data to help us improve team performance. You will help with driving and improving our evidence-based decision-making by writing robust data pipelines, visualizing data to identify causal relationships, building predictive models and forecasts, and developing internal tooling to integrate it all. We are building an industry-leading group and seek diverse individuals from all industries and levels of experience.

Your assignment will be for the duration of the 2018-2019 Basketball Season.  This position would ideally be located in Auburn Hills, Michigan but we will consider candidates who are located elsewhere and could work remotely.

What you’ll be doing

  • Combine statistical modeling techniques with your intuition for basketball to rigorously develop and test models for use in on-court strategy and player personnel decisions
  • Visualize and explore data sets to generate hypotheses and explain underlying relationships
  • Operate internal tools to help drive decisions—you will not only build the models, but will be a principal consumer of them. Represent your insights with conviction and integrity in high-level strategic discussions
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by Management
What we’re looking for
  • Proficiency in SQL and either R or Python data analysis tools
  • Experience applying statistical methods and an ability to derive meaning from data
  • Willingness to get into the details filling in missing pieces or fixing bugs. This work will involve a variety of datasets in various conditions; you will need to write code that de-dupes, matches, and imputes
  • Evidence of a deep sense of ownership of previous work is required
  • Capacity to combine information from multiple data sources and produce actionable reporting
  • Ability to convey complex findings in a concise and articulate manner
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Capacity to use time efficiently
  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment
  • Strong social and communication skills
