Under the direction of the Head Coach, this position manages all aspects of running the operations of Harvard’s Varsity Men’s Basketball program, which is a Division I program with 15 to 18 student-athletes, 3 full-time and 1 volunteer coach, 1 strength & conditioning coach 1 athletic trainer and administrative staff and managing the program budget. With the exception of directly coaching student-athletes, handles all other managerial functions for Men’s Basketball. Handles all aspects of alumni relations and fundraising for Men’s Basketball.
Position Description
1. Manages and oversees daily operations of the Men’s Basketball program.
- Develops and implements plans and strategies affecting all aspects of running the Men’s Basketball program, working in partnership with other Athletics departments and leadership to implement such plans and strategies. Strategies include marketing Men’s Basketball games and events; achieving and building ticket sales to generate revenue and promote audience participation; and ensuring appropriate and timely preparation and release of media and other communications about Men’s Basketball.
- Manages and oversees the annual budget (excluding salaries) for the program. Seeks and implements appropriate cost efficiencies, particularly in the areas of travel and equipment. Develops and manages all purchase and replacement of equipment – outfitting/protective gear, field, AV, locker room, office. Remains current on and implements industry safety standards for equipment.
- Develops scheduling of Men’s Basketball facilities and facilities used by the Men’s Basketball program, including Lavietes Pavilion, and meeting spaces. Works closely with Athletics office of scheduling, travel, events, and facilities.
- Manages awards programs for student-athletes, including working with Men’s Basketball coaches to determine recipients of Major H awards, senior gifts, and the President’s Special Award.
- Manages and provides direction for the day-to-day work of the Staff Assistants who provide administrative and clerical support for Men’s Basketball. Manages a volunteer coach with respect to videotaping, editing, and analysis. Manages student workers. Manages the Men’s Basketball Office and its operations when the coaches are away.
2. Manages all aspects of alumni relations and development (fundraising and relationship building).
- Implements fundraising strategies to raise annually for Men’s Basketball, primarily through the Friends of Harvard Men’s Basketball alumni. Primary contact and relationship manager between the Friends of Harvard Men’s Basketball and the Men’s Basketball program.
- Measures results and effectiveness of alumni events to determine their value for the future. Produces cost/benefit analysis of all alumni events. Consults with Friends Leadership to help evaluate and plan their fundraising strategy.
3. Manages the recruitment of student-athletes with the goal of ensuring success both in the classroom and on the field.
- Oversees and manages the student-recruiting process for Men’s Basketball (over 250 prospects annually), including planning the national travel schedule for the Men’s Basketball coaching staff and ensuring that the University Admissions Office has all information needed to make admissions decisions.
- Plans and implements the high school senior official visit program (prospective students and their families over 4 weekends). The program consists of strategic placement of prospective with current students; planning special presentations by coaches and other Harvard affiliates; and ensuring that logistics (meals, campus tours, classroom participation) occur in an organized and timely manner. Also plans and runs high school junior official visit program.
4. Develops and implements an effective community relations strategy.
Basic Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and at least three years of intercollegiate athletics experience.

Successful candidates will have the following:
- Strong interpersonal and managerial skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in FileMaker Pro and with Microsoft Office programs.
- Proven written and communication skills essential and must have ability to work independently and exercise judgment and discretion.
- Ability to multi-task and meet required deadlines.
- Experience developing and managing budgets and financial reporting.
- Must be detailed oriented and have strong organizational skills.
