As a head coach in NJIT’s intercollegiate athletic program, the incumbent will be responsible for all functions relating to the management and running of a successful Division I Men’s Basketball program, including recruiting, budget management, staff and student-athlete supervision, scheduling events, and fundraising. Responsibilities may also include, but are not limited to the following:
NCAA Compliance: Knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA rules, regulations, bylaws, constitutions and related university rules, regulations and policies.
Overall Administration and NCAA Compliance
1. Ensure that the aim and objectives of the sport program support those of the university and are within established university policies, and NCAA Compliance rules and regulations.
2. Pass NCAA recruiting/compliance exam. Submit appropriate compliance documentation regarding NCAA rules and regulations to compliance office.
3. Schedule all Men’s Intercollegiate Basketball competitions in conjunction with Athletic Director.
4. Maintain current health care certifications. (First aid, CPR/AED).
5. Enforce all NJIT policies and procedures including, but not limited to, general student, staff and department specific.
6. Report all possible infractions of NCAA rules and regulations to the Compliance Officer.
7. Attend NCAA rules education meetings as directed by the Compliance Officer and Athletic Director.
8. Make recommendations for facility maintenance and construction to the Director of Athletics.
9. Represent the sports program to various institutional programs, government agencies, funding agencies, students, parents and the general public.
Coaching
1. Organize, prepare, and conduct open tryouts, individual and team practices, training and competition.
2. Coordinate an effective in-season and off-season conditioning program.
3. Lead, monitor and coordinate training and practice sessions, ensuring that all appropriate safety guidelines and standards are maintained.
4. Responsible for the welfare of all students under coach’s charge.
5. Address and resolve any issues that arise with a student-athlete, the team and/or a member of the men’s basketball staff.
6. Strive to provide guidance and assistance enhancing a student-athlete’s welfare regarding his/her personal, academic, and athletic experience while at NJIT.
7. Oversee team and enforce all established Athletic Department team travel and code of conduct policies when away from NJIT.
8. Perform constant evaluation of team and individual performances.
9. Assist in academic monitoring and support for all student-athletes.
10. Maintain published office hour schedule, as approved by the Athletic Director. Inform daily changes as needed.
11. Work with athletic training staff as needed for prevention and care of player injuries and other health related issues.
Staff Development and Management
1. Responsible for the hiring, training, disciplining and evaluation of assistant coaching staff. This may include managing staff on a daily basis, addressing and resolving any issues, conducting performance reviews, and making final hiring and firing decisions.
2. Make decisions regarding utilization of basketball staff members.
3. Mentor staff
4. Evaluate and make recommendations for personnel actions for coaches and basketball support staff.
Budget Management and Recruitment
1. Recommend and submit proposed budget for the Men’s Intercollegiate Basketball Program for each upcoming season, with sport administrator approval.
2. Recommend the purchasing of equipment and uniform apparel as needed for the Men’s Intercollegiate Basketball Program.
3. Develop an effective recruiting system, which identifies prospective student-athletes for the Men’s intercollegiate basketball program, in accordance with NCAA rules, regulations, guidelines, and standards.
Additional Functions:
Marketing, Fundraising and Community Activities
1. Oversee the marketing and promotion of the men’s basketball program to all local constituencies including- campus, alumni, local Newark, Essex, and New Jersey communities.
2. Coordinate fundraising efforts for the sport within the guidelines set forth by the Athletics Department.
3. Responsible for developing good media relations between members of the sport staff, squad representatives, and various media.
4. Participate in a minimum of two (2) community service activities annually.
5. Establish and maintain positive and effective relationship with NJIT Alumni.
6. Run clinics and camps for university and local community.
7. Represent NJIT athletic department at alumni and school functions as needed.
8. Assist with departments SAAC/Champs Life Skills efforts as they involve men’s basketball coaches and team members.
Teaching
1. Teach in the required Physical Education and Sports Management programs, if necessary.
Other
1. Perform other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
A Bachelors Degree is required; Minimum of 5 years of coaching experience on the intercollegiate level; comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues; excellent communication and conflict resolution skills; demonstrated leadership ability; prior supervisory/management experience; valid driver’s license.
At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Head coaching experience at the intercollegiate level preferred.
