Description: | The Head Men’s Basketball Coach reports to the Director of Athletics (AD) and is responsible for the planning, organization, performance and conduct of Onondaga Community College’s NJCAA Men’s Basketball Team. • Teach student-athletes about proper basketball skills, techniques and overall fitness; provide leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of the student-athlete. • Organize, plan and attend practices; offer appropriate game strategy and tactics; attend all games. • Act professionally when communicating with players, coaches, staff, media and individuals in the community; show respect to all involved; be responsible regarding student-athlete conduct before, during and after games. • Be knowledgeable of the College’s policies and procedures on recruiting, academic programs and philosophy of athletic programs; follow all policies both internally and externally. • Promote healthy lifestyle choices and habits to our student-athletes. • Mentor and advise student-athletes through college registration and the transfer process; ensure that academics comes first. • Monitor student-athlete academic progress at all times; manage the Retention Alert software program for all men’s basketball student-athletes; work with our Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development to ensure student-athletes receive the academic support they need. • Have an operational understanding of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rules and requirements; follow these guidelines at all times. • Recruit qualified student-athletes to Onondaga Community College. • Ensure that all members of the men’s basketball team are engaged in a meaningful and enjoyable student-athlete experience while they participate on the team. • With the approval of the AD, hire assistant coaches who are focused on student success. • Work with the AD in preparing annual team operating budgets. • Supplement team operating budgets with specific fundraising plans and efforts; secure AD approval for these plans. • Provide community instruction through Onondaga Community College basketball camps and clinics; follow all camp rules and policies. • Ensure equipment and facilities are secured appropriately after each practice and game. • Exercise discretion in handling emergencies/injuries which might arise during practices, scrimmages or games; keep the College athletic training staff informed of all injuries. • Attend all College, conference and regional meetings as required. • Maintain CPR/AED/First Aid certification. • Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and prior coaching experience in the sport, preferably at the secondary or post-secondary level or an equivalent combination of training and experience; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Proven success as a head coach; knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations and prior experience coaching at a community college; playing experience at the college and/or at a professional level.
