SUMMARY: Organizes, directs, supervises and administers all phases of a Division III athletic program by performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Athletic Director.
Assists in selecting qualified individuals to serve as assistant coaches in the program.
Operates the program in a liberal arts Division III philosophy, giving attention to academic success, moral character of staff and athletes and community involvement.
Responsible for organizing and conducting a recruiting program, which includes dispersing information concerning the sports program, arranging for visitations and cooperating with the Admission Department in a coordinated effort to attract student-athletes to Otterbein University.
Responsible to the Athletic Director or his/her representative for all phases of the athletic program involving, but not limited to, budget, equipment, staff, athlete control, academic success, OAC, NCAA rules and regulations ,campus policies and procedures, athlete image and discipline.
Abides by University, OAC, NCAA polices; confers with the Director of Athletics concerning all departmental and conference policies; responsible for making certain all of the assistant coaches are familiar with the athletic policy manual; be familiar with departmental and OAC policies; plans coaching/teaching techniques, schedules for practice and matches; is knowledgeable of Division III NCAA rules as outlined in the official manual; insures that the NCAA amateur form (student athlete form/drug testing, etc.) is signed before any participation takes place; must submit a roster of players to the Athletic Director’s administrative assistant, to be typed and sent to the University registrar in preparation to be sent to the OAC office prior to the first contest; confers with the S.I.D. concerning sports publicity (All information for brochures and schedules must be submitted prior to the season. The deadline will be determined by the University Relations Office.); responsible for implementing the department and university policies concerning sportsmanship and school representation.
Responsible for medical care (or his/her staff): must work with the athletic trainers and team physicians for the medical well-being and protection of the student-athlete during pre-season, regular season and post season activities; each athlete must receive a medical examination before participation; trainers will establish the training room hours for preventative care and rehabilitation; emergency procedures must be reviewed/established for practice and competition.
Must be knowledgeable of Otterbein University policies concerning but not limited to: Hazing, Substance Abuse, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, Sexual Violence, Discrimination and Intimidation and FERPA.
Must be familiar with the Otterbein University Student Code of Conduct and the Student Athlete Handbook.
Responsible for the physical appearance and personal conduct of all coaches, staff and players associated with the program. It is understood that these areas of interest will be kept in line with the standards of good conduct and image that will reflect positively on the program, the athletic department and Otterbein University. The athletic director will serve as a resource for the head coach and will assist in administering the standards for all sports.
Responsible for being sensitive to the needs of underrepresented populations. Furthermore, the promotion of ethnic diversity should be demonstrated in the recruitment of both athletes and coaches.
May be required to drive team and coaches.
