ABOUT BLUEFIELD STATE COLLEGE ATHLETICS:  Bluefield State College (BSC) is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II.  BSC Athletics is home to 22 men’s and women’s varsity sports (12 new sports including football), offering qualified students rewarding opportunities in athletic competition, training, and support activities. Athletic highlights include Men’s Basketball as 2019 USCAA National Champion Runner Up, Women’s Basketball as 2-time ECAC Champions, Men’s Tennis as 8-time Atlantic Regional Champions, and Men’s Golf as 2016 USCAA National Champions. POSITION CLASSIFICATION/COMPENSATION: This position is Nonclassified, Full-time, carries an Exempt status under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and serves at the will and pleasure of the President. Actual compensation will be commensurate with specific qualifications and experience related to the position. Position is contingent upon available federal grant funding.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Head Men’s Basketball Coach is responsible for providing leadership to develop and implement a strong, competitive basketball program while promoting academic success of student athletes to enhance academic progress and graduation rates.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Teach sports-specific skills toward the development of student athletic performance, while promoting academic success of student athletes to enhance academic progress and graduation rates.
  • Provide leadership for the men’s basketball program that adheres to the highest standard of integrity and professionalism.
  • Foster an environment that promotes the academic success, health, and welfare of student athletes in the men’s basketball program, working collaboratively with administrative offices as may be appropriate.  Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes.
  • Ensure compliance with all NCAA, conference, Title IX, and College rules and regulations, including matters related to academics, diversity and gender equity.
  • Conduct practice, contests and manage day to day operations of the men’s basketball program.  Develop contest schedule and coordinate all team travel for the men’s basketball program.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting plan.
  • Perform the administrative duties associated with the responsibilities of Head Coach, including but not limited to:  administering the sport’s budget, including forecasting and controlling expenditures; preparing reports; and participating in revenue-generating and fundraising goal-setting and activities for the men’s basketball program, the Big Blue Athletic Scholarship Fund, and the Athletic Department at-large.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.  Includes representing the college at internal and external functions, marketing the men’s basketball program, and developing and maintaining positive alumni and community relations.

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:   Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and at least one regular season of basketball coaching experience required.  In addition:

  • Commitment to the mission of higher education, student academic success and student well-being.
  • Record of personal and fiscal integrity.
  • Excellent organizational and strategic planning skills.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations and Title IX compliance.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and work effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to meet the extended hours and travel requirements of the position.
  • NCAA Recruiting Certification test must be passed within 60 days of hire (required by the NCAA for recruiting).
  • Must obtain CPR Certification within 120 days of start date/upon hire, and maintain certification in good standing at all times during employment in this position.
  • Must maintain a valid Driver’s License.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree in relevant area strongly preferred.  At least two years of higher education coaching experience in assigned sports program preferred.  First Aid certification is desired.
