The Men’s Head Basketball Coach is responsible for planning and directing the recruitment, conditioning, training, and performance of student athletes, along with fiscal program management, for the Harris-Stowe State University Men’s Basketball Program. This position reports to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. This is a professional head coaching position, and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of the NAIA, the America Midwest Conference and Harris-Stowe State University.   Employees in this job class may be subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract which is typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis. This position directs an Assistant Coach in leading the team performance; as well as serve as Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct the overall planning and execution of the intercollegiate men’s basketball program.
  • Recruit prospective student-athletes and ensure timely submission of their academic records for admissions.
  • Monitor academic progress and status of team members
  • Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the athletics program.
  • Plan coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NAIA and America Midwest Conference regulations.
  • Coach team members individually and in groups, and demonstrate game techniques.
  • Develop and implement game strategy and position assignments.
  • Oversee the strength and conditioning programs for student-athletes.
  • Manage all operational, fiscal, and administrative activities for the specific sports program.
  • Promote the athletic program and specific sport through community events, public speaking, fundraising, and marketing.
  • Supervises team operations to ensure regional scheduling, budget; team travel, lodging, meals are monitored and facilitated properly.
  • Assist with athletic department fundraising initiatives, booster club, and special events
  • Attends and assist with facilitating monthly staff meetings
  • Models and teaches NAIA Live 5; integrity, respect, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship
  • Ability to monitor academic performance of student athletes.
  • Performs others duties as assigned by Athletic Director

Minimum Education and Experience:

Position requires bachelor’s degree, five years of successful collegiate coaching  experience  as an Assistant Coach or Head Coach with proven extensive recruiting experience; and/or seven years of successful coaching experience as a High School Head Coach for Basketball with some collegiate coaching experience. Position also requires game day, team operations, and fundraising experience. Previous NAIA coaching experience, eligibility and compliance knowledge preferred.
