Hartwick College is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to serve as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach. The Head Coach will be responsible for leading all aspects of the men’s basketball program, including recruiting and retaining student-athletes, developing and implementing strategic game plans, fostering a positive team culture, and promoting the academic success and personal growth of student-athletes.

Working in the primary capacity of an educator, the head coach enhances the student-athlete experience and strengthens the College’s image and reputation by leading all aspects of the basketball program with integrity. This position is under the supervision of the Director of Athletics, and will make it a priority to provide guidance, ongoing assessment, and encouragement to players and staff. The head coach is expected to serve as a visible and engaged ambassador for the men’s basketball program, representing Hartwick College at community events, alumni gatherings, and fundraising activities to cultivate relationships with alumni, donors, and other supporters to generate financial support for the men’s basketball program.

Responsibilities

  • Support the mission and goals of the College and athletic department.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan to achieve short term and long-term goals and objectives.
  • Lead the operations of an intercollegiate athletic team, including instructing student-athletes on the rules, fundamentals, regulations, equipment, strategies, and techniques of the sport
  • Design intentional instruction for individual student-athletes and the team.
  • Oversee and manage all administrative duties associated with the program, including contest scheduling, budget, equipment management, and team trip planning.
  • Assess players’ skills, monitor competitions and practices, and track athletic and academic performance of student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by serving as a mentor, responding to player concerns and advising them both personally and academically.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the principles that guide NCAA Division III athletics.
  • Build a team culture of respect for and commitment to the team, coaches, administrative and support staff, faculty and college staff, and other internal and external constituents.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and retention of qualified student-athletes, and advising of student-athletes in accordance with college standards.
  • Must keep reliable and accurate electronic records of all recruitment and retention activities and be able to report on activities in a clear and professional manner.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics, including teaching academic PE coaching courses as needed, assisting with game-day administration, etc.
  • Provide community service opportunities for student-athletes and work to instill the importance of giving back.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with all internal and external constituents.
  • Play an integral role in fundraising for the College, athletic department, and men’s basketball program.

Other department expectations include the following:

  • As a college administrator, this person is expected to comport themself in a professional and ethical manner at all times, both on and off campus.
  • Comply with all Federal, State, local, NCAA, Empire 8 Conference, College, and department regulations, rules, policies and procedures.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coach(es).
  • General office work (email, database management, phone calls, etc.)
  • Develop, oversee and manage sport specific operating budgets and program fundraising accounts.
  • Responsible for ordering equipment and supplies in line with College and athletic department policies and procedures. Responsible for staying within budget parameters.
  • Be a positive member of the department by supporting other programs and finding ways to be involved for the betterment of the department and College (i.e., attend Code Blue events, volunteer for special department events).
  • Service to the Hartwick community through committee work and/or service to National organizations through committee work (i.e., department committees, NCAA, coaching associations).
  • Attend important College functions (i.e., College Conversations with the President and other key administrators) and campus activities including Welcome Weekend, True Blue Weekend, Honors Convocation, Accepted Students’ Day, and Commencement Weekend.

Qualifications: Minimum requirements for this position are a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university (Master’s preferred) with between 3 and 5 years of experience in an assistant or head coach position.

Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurance through the College; appropriate licensing for sport preferred or willingness to obtain; and CPR/First Aid certification.

  • Demonstrate effective teaching methods and be able to provide academic guidance and mentoring to scholar-athletes.
  • Excellent leadership, role modeling, organizational, interpersonal, time management, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have a thorough understanding and working knowledge of NCAA regulations and be up to date with safety, rules and regulations and proper certifications.
  • General computer skills including Microsoft software (Word, Office, Excel, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of the following systems a preference- Synergy, Hudl, Front Rush, and Slate.
  • Administrative experience and supervisory skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of the sport.
  • Ability to provide academic guidance and mentoring to student-athletes.
  • Ability to multitask and handle a job with a daily change of pace.
  • Ability to use independent action, estimating skill, memory, and problem-solving skills.

Pay Range: $55,000 – $61,200
